OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Sept. 15, 2010) – The Maritime women's volleyball team opened up the 2010 campaign with three matches at the Old Westbury Invitational this past Sunday. There, the Privateers took on Skyline opponents Farmingdale State, Bard and Old Westbury. The matches were not counted towards the conference standings, as Maritime will not begin conference play until Sept. 26.
Maritime lost the first match of the day against Farmingdale State three sets to one. The Rams captured the first two games of the match by the identical scores of 25-10. However, the Privateers fought back to win the next set 25-22, but lost the fourth set 25-7.
In the second contest of the afternoon, Maritime rallied back in the first set but Bard hung on to claim the 25-23 victory and go up 1-0 in the match. The Raptors then went on to win the next two sets by the scores of 25-11 and 25-13.
Taking on the hosts in the final match of the day, the Privateers put up a fight in the first set but fell short by the score of 25-18. The Panthers won the second set, 25-3, and then completed the sweep by capturing the third set, 25-10.
Maritime saw great play from freshman Megan White (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury), who led the team in digs with 22. Sophomore Krystal Miranda (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) (Putnam Valley, N.Y./ Putnam Valley) led the Privateers with six kills, while junior Natalie Jackson (Stockton, Calif./Bear Creek) (Stockton, Calif./Bear Creek) recorded four kills, a team-best 16 assists, six service aces and five digs. At the net, sophomore Jerrica Romero (Bronx, N.Y./Herbert H Lehman) (Bronx, N.Y./Herbert H. Lehman) and Donna Pellegrino (Valley Stream, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) (Valley Stream, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) both recorded six total blocks to lead Maritime.
The Privateers return to action this coming weekend, when the squad travels to Castine, Maine to take part in the Maritime Classic hosted by the Maine Maritime Academy. There, Maritime will take on Maine Maritime, Massachusetts Maritime and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point).
