THROGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 26, 2010) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team will open the 2010 season on Saturday, Feb. 27, when the squad travels to Williamsport, Pa., to take on Lycoming College. Opening faceoff against the Warriors is scheduled for 1 p.m.

2010 Maritime Men's Lacrosse Season Preview

The 2010 Privateers lacrosse team will be under the direction of Daniel Lawrence, who enters his first year as head coach and fifth year on the Maritime lacrosse coaching staff. The team returns 21 players and adds 18 new players to a squad looking to build off of its 7-7 record last year. Offensively, Maritime returns 69-percent of their scoring from last year's offense that scored 176 goals on the season and averaged 12.56 goals a game.

The attack will be led by two returning 20-goal scorers, senior Larry Montrueil and junior Alex Korb. Montrueil, a co-captain of this year's squad, from New Hyde Park, N.Y., has been a tremendous offensive force since his arrival on campus three years ago. He put up 25 goals and 11 assists in his freshmen year, 29 goals and 24 assists his sophomore year and 29 goals and 15 assists last year. His performances last year led to First Team All-Skyline honors, his second time on the All-Conference team. Korb a native of Islip, N.Y., was third on the team last year with 25 goals and 12 assists. Korb's play in 2009 placed him on the all-Conference Second Team. Montreuil and Korb will prove to be a potent one-two punch for opposing defenses to deal with. They will be assisted by returning attackmen junior Seth Collins (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) (five goals), and converted midfielder junior Michael Hanratty (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) (10 goals, 8 assists) who will move to his natural position of attack. Along with newcomers TJ Fitzsimons (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch) (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch), and Theo Greene (Pomona, N.Y./New York Military Academy) (Pomona, N.Y./New York Military Academy).

This year's midfield will be the most experienced and deepest group Maritime has had in recent history. Leading the pack will be junior Andrew Marklin (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East), senior Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland), and senior Steve Hackeling (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor). These three midfielders played large roles on last year's team, where they either scored or assisted on 47-percent of Maritime's goals. They will be looked to improve upon their success this year. Marklin was the third leading scorer on the midfield last year with his 11 goals and six assists. Doherty was “Mr. Everything” for Maritime last year. He played on the first midfield line, where he scored 19 goals and had 14 assists. He was also Maritime's number one face off man. He took 197, winning 124, for a win percentage of 62.9-percent. Hackeling has been a consistent offensive force the past two years on the team. He has put up double-digit goals both of the last two years and will be looked to this year to do even more offensively. Also returning at midfielder are senior Michael Bonanza (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Kent) (one assist), junior Jesse de Boer (four goals, two assists), junior Ryan Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (two goals), sophomore John Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (two assists) and sophomore Dylan Walsh (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East). New to the midfield position will be Ryan Honey (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point), Mike Carroll (Bethany Beach, Del./St. Thomas More) (Bethany Beach, Del./St. Thomas Moore), Cory Gallagher (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), Jake Lehmann (Albertson, N.Y./Herricks) (Albertson, N.Y./Herricks), Anthony Mendez (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell), Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), Joe Villarreal (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell), Patrick Mangum (Pasadena, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore). The depth and talent at midfield should allow the Privateers to use three lines of midfield and play at a faster tempo than they did last year.

The defense will be led by returning starter, senior-captain goalie Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn./Westhill) (180 Saves). The Privateers are lucky to be deep at the goalie position where Gallagher will be pushed by junior Keith Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (8.23 GAA), Kevin May (Hicksville, N.Y./St. Dominic) (100-percent save pct.) and newcomer Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford N.Y./Seaford). Playing in front of Gallagher will be returning starter sophomore Steven Tonn (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (15 caused turnovers, 34 groundballs) along with returning starter junior-captain TJ Beaudette (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) (two goals, one assist). The returners battling it out for playing time are senior Brian Tweedy (Ridgefield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) (4GB/2CT), sophomore Mark Arnold (Bay Shore, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) (14 GB/3 CT), sophomore Dan Kyle (8GB/2 CT) and sophomore Charles Keith (Shorham, N.Y./Shorham-Wading River). Joining these returning players are a talented group of base defensemen, Greg Andrews (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley), Nicholas Duda (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East), and Jonathan Miracolo (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville). Joining Beaudette at the LSM position are some very talented athletes, returning sophomore Thomas Mullady (Centerport, N.Y./St. Anthony's), and newcomers Benjamin Pearce (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) and Ryan Schuster (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining). The defense is young this year, but very fast and athletic. They are looking to turn up the pressure on opposing teams' offenses and force more turnovers this year.

The schedule again this year should prove to be very challenging, Wesleyan from the NESCAC, and Ithaca from the Empire 8. Maritime also has the traditional rivalry games with West Conn, champion of the Little East, USMMA of the Landmark and our new rivalry with Lycoming of the MAC and Massachusetts Maritime of the Pilgrim League. The Skyline Conference games should prove to be a dog fight this season, just as it was in '09, beginning on March 31 against Farmingdale State.
