THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 23, 2010) – The Maritime men's basketball team defeated Farmingdale State, 69-57, Tuesday night at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium in the Skyline Conference Quarterfinals. With the win, the Privateers improve to 19-7 overall, while the Rams end the season with an even 13-13 record.
Senior Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) recorded his second double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds, and was four assists shy of a triple-double. Junior Shamair Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) scored a game-high 21 points. Juniors Justin Bright (Brooklyn, N.Y./Park West) and Trevis Craig (Queens, N.Y./Springfield) chipped in with eight points each.
Maritime bolted out of the gates and ran the score up to 17-2 and the Rams, who were NCAA Tournament Elite Eight participants last season, were forced to use their second time out early. Momentum stayed with the Privateers for the remainder of the half, as they took a 22-point lead into the lockers 40-22. The team shot 38.7-percent from the field in the half and scored 11 points off of 10 Farmingdale turnovers.
In the second half, Maritime opened up its largest lead of the night, 25 points, when a Williams three-pointer made the score 66-41 with 6:39 to play. The Rams fought back hard in the final five minutes, but were in too deep of a hole to come back and the Privateers cruised to the victory.
The No. 4-seed Privateers will meet top-seeded Old Westbury on Thursday, Feb. 25, in the Skyline semifinals. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m. on the Panthers' Westbury, Long Island, campus. This is Maritime's third-straight trip to the semis, marking the first time in program history since the inception of the Skyline Conference the team has made it this far.
