THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 22, 2010) – Maritime senior Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) was named to the Skyline Conference men's basketball weekly honor roll for the second consecutive week, as announced by the conference on Monday.
The Baltimore, Md., native averaged a team-high 16.7 points per game during the Privateers 1-2 week last week. Cooper led all players with 23 points in the 72-69 win over Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday which ended the regular season. He also recorded 5.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.9 steals per game over the three-game stretch.
Cooper ranks fifth in the conference with 16.4 points per game, while his 3.42 assists per game are good for eighth among Skyline players. Junior Justin Bright (Brooklyn, N.Y./Park West) and senior Adedokun Olanrewaju (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) join Cooper on the conference's top-10 scoring list, as Bright's 14.1 ppg ranks eighth and Olanrewaju's 13.5 ppg is tenth.
Bright also ranks fourth in the Skyline with 4.16 assists per game and fifth with a 76.5-percent shooting from the free throw line. Olanrewaju is the conference's second-best rebounds with 8.7 boards per game, while his 52.5-percent shooting from the floor ranks fifth and his 75.0-percent shooting from the free throw line ties him for eighth.
Junior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) joins Olanrewaju on the top-10 rebounding list, as his 7.1 rebounds per game ranks seventh in the Skyline, while his 2.25 steals per game is sixth and his 0.88 blocks per game ranks eighth. Classmate Shamair Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) is the Skyline's third-best three-point shooter, connecting on 39.7-percent of his shots from beyond the arc.
As a team, the Privateers rank first in the conference in six categories: scoring defense (62.6 points allowed per game), scoring margin (+10.7), field goal percentage (.470), field goal percentage defense (.405), rebounding margin (+4.6) and steals (10.32 per game)
For the third-straight season, the Maritime men's basketball team will host the opening round of the Skyline Conference Men's Basketball Championships. The Privateers, who enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed with an 18-7 overall record (14-6 Skyline), will welcome fifth-seeded Farmingdale State (13-12, 13-7 Skyline) on Tuesday, Feb. 23. This will be the third time that Maritime will take on the Rams this season, as both teams won their respective home games. The Privateers defeated Farmingdale 86-63 on Feb. 6, but lost on the road to the Ram, 59-58, on Feb. 16. The winner of the Tuesday night's game will move on to face top-ranked Old Westbury on Thursday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. in Westbury, Long Island.
