FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (Feb. 16, 2010) – The Maritime men's basketball team fought back after trailing by as much as 22 points to take a late one-point lead on the road at Farmingdale State Tuesday night, but the Rams scored the last basket and earned the victory, 59-58. With the loss, the Privateers fall to 17-6 (13-5 Skyline), while Farmingdale improves to 12-11 (12-6 Skyline).
Four players scored in double-figures for Maritime, led by junior Justin Bright (Brooklyn, N.Y./Park West) with 16. Senior Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) scored 14 points, while classmate Adedokun Olanrewaju (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) and junior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) added 13 and 11, respectively. Olanrewaju and Hurley also tied for the game-high with eight rebounds.
The Rams built up their largest lead, 22 points, after starting the game on a 28-6 run over the first 11 minutes of play. Farmingdale held Maritime to just 17 points in the first half, as the Privateers shot just 26.9-percent from the floor.
Down by 15 points, 51-36, with 7:59 to play in the game, Maritime went on a 22-6 run over a 6:51 stretch and grabbed a one-point lead with 1:08 to play on a three-point play by Bright. That lead was the first of the game for the Privateers. The Rams scored on their next possession, however. Then two late Maritime possessions failed and despite outscoring Farmingdale 41-24 in the second, the Privateers lost the game.
Maritime is back in action on Thursday night, when the squad plays host to St. Joseph's (15-8, 14-4 Skyline). The contest will mark the final regular season home game for seniors Cooper, Olanrewaju and Sean Robinson (Bronx, N.Y./H.S. for Art & Design). Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
