Cooper’s 23 Points Lead Privateers To 84-71 Victory Over Sage

ALBANY, N.Y. (Feb. 11, 2010) – Senior Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) scored a game-high 23 points – 19 of which came in the second half –  leading Maritime to its ninth straight victory, an 84-71 conference win on the road over Sage. The Privateers improve to 17-4 (13-3 Skyline), while the Gators fall to 6-16 (5-13 Skyline).

 

Cooper shot 50.0-percent from the field (9-for-18), brought down six rebounds and dished out six assists. Senior Adedokun Olanrewaju (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) recorded his third-straight double-double with 20 points and a game-high 13 boards. Juniors Justin Bright (Brooklyn, N.Y./Park West) and Shamair Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) rounded out Maritime's double-digit scorers with 15 and 14, respectively, as Bright led all players with seven assists and Williams had a game-high four steals.

 

The game began with five lead changes over the first 9:46, before Sage took over control and built up its largest lead of the night, seven points, at 28-21 on a layup by Mark Farbotko at 5:07. Maritime fought back, however, with a 9-0 run to take a two-point advantage, 30-28, with 41 seconds left in the half. The Gators scored a late bucket that tied the game at 30 and the teams went into the locker room evened up.

 

After two more tied-scores brought the game to 34-34, Maritime went on an incredible 30-4 run over an 8:25 stretch of the second, as the Privateers took a commanding 64-38 lead. Sage would fight its way back to within seven points, 72-65, with 2:44 to play, but Maritime was able to fight the Gators' momentum and held on for the victory.

 

The Privateers – who are now a half game back from first-place Old Westbury, who are 14-3 in Skyline action – next play host to fourth-place Purchase (15-8, 12-6 Skyline) on Saturday, Feb. 11. Tipoff against the Panthers is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
