THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 22, 2010) – The Maritime hockey team played three games in three days this past weekend and won the last two after dropping the opening game Friday night against Rowan, 5-4. On Saturday night, on the same home ice at the Parkwood Sports Complex in Great Neck, the Privateers defeated New Paltz by the score of 5-1. On the road on Sunday, Maritime won in overtime over a previously undefeated, first-place Wagner team, 6-5, in Staten Island. The Privateers' record improves to 8-7 overall on the season, while their 7-2 mark in MCHC action keeps them in second place with 14 points.
In the 5-4 loss to Rowan on Friday, Maritime got goals from junior Greg Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) assisted by classmate Kyle McGrath (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield Secondary); junior Dan Tyx (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) from freshman Patrick Masterman (Norfolk, Va./Hargrave Military Academy) (Norfolk, Va./Hargrave Military); freshman Steven Vietri (Bronx, N.Y./Fortress Christian) unassisted; and Tyx from Altini. Sophomore goalie D.J. Gennarelli (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) played two periods and made 15 saves on 20 shots. He was replaced by freshman Zach Dietrich (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers) in the third, who made saves on all seven shots he faced.
Against New Paltz on Saturday, freshman Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) opened the scoring just 2:37 into the game off a pass from classmate Josh Hempel (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch). The Privateers then scored back-to-back goals when sophomore Sean Dougherty (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) and Tyx found the back of the net just 16 seconds apart. Dougherty's was unassisted, while Tyx scored off a pass from freshman Conner Brailsford (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) ( Clayton, N.C./Clayton). When New Paltz scored less than two minutes later to make it 3-1, Maritime answered 17 seconds after when sophomore Frank Castelli (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) lit the lamp to give the Privateers the three-goal lead back. Galli picked up his second goal of the day from Hempel and Castelli with 8:12 remaining in the game. Dietrich made 23 saves to pick up the victory in goal.
On Sunday, Maritime had to fight from behind to defeat the No. 10 team in the ACHA Atlantic Region, Wagner College, in overtime at the WWII Veterans War Memorial Rink in Staten Island. The Privateers were trailing 3-0 in the first period before freshman Jeff Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) scored when he found his own rebound and jammed the puck in with 4:57 remaining in the opening period. Dougherty scored Maritime's second goal off a faceoff won by Tyx that went to McGrath, who fed Dougherty to make it 4-2.
The Privateers pulled within 4-3 with two seconds remaining in the second period when Masterman scored off a faceoff won by Hempel. Maritime fell behind by two once again, but Wagner fell into penalty issues late in the game that allowed the Privateers to climb back in. Galli scored on a slapshot that beat the goalie to the top glove-side off an assist from Jeff Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) with 4:28 left in regulation. On a 5-on-3 power play late, Maritime tied the game with 36 seconds left when Galli lit the lamp for the second time after a scramble in front. Greg Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) and Tyx were credited with the assists on the game-tying goal that forced overtime.
In overtime, Maritime was still on a power play from a five-minute major penalty that was called against Wagner late in the third period. Dan Tyx scored the game winning goal two minutes into the extra frame after a slapshot by Galli hit the crossbar and Tyx was in front to poke home the rebound. Dietrich picked up the victory playing solid in goal for the Privateers.
The Maritime hockey team returns to action next Monday, Nov. 29, when the team plays an away game at the Parkwood Sports Complex against the Kings Point Mariners. The puck drops against the Privateers' arch-rivals at 8:15 p.m.
