Hockey Beats Rowan, 5-4, To End Three-Game Losing Skid

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 15, 2010) – The Maritime hockey team played three road games this past weekend, losing split-squad contests on Saturday to Suffolk (4-3) and Rowan (8-1) before beating conference opponent Stevens, 5-4, on Sunday. The Privateers record is now an even 6-6 overall, while the squad moves to 5-2 in Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference action, good for a second-place tie with Stevens.

Maritime outshot Suffolk, 42-27, on Saturday but gave up the game-winning goal with just under four minutes to play. The Privateers got goals from Josh Hempel (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch), sophomore Pat Masterman (Norfolk, Va./Hargrave Military Academy) and freshman Jeff Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's)  (Floral Park, N.Y./Saint Mary's).

Freshman Kyle Troup (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) picked up two assists for Maritime in the loss, while sophomore Frank Castelli (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Francis Prep), freshman Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) and sophomore Taylor Carsch (Hockessin, Del./AI Dupont) (Hockessin, Del./AI Dupont) each recorded an assist apiece.

Sophomore Joe Crulcich (Chicago, Ill./St. John's Northwestern Military Academy) had the only goal for the Privateers against Rowan, assisted by John Jackson (Pawling, N.Y./Amherst Central) (Pawling, N.Y./Amherst Central). Sophomore DJ Gennarelli (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) played 30 minutes in goal and made 14 saves on 16 shots.

In the victory over Stevens on Sunday, Maritime exploded out to a 5-0 lead in the opening period. Hempel scored the first goal from Castelli and James McManus (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River). Junior Dan Tyx (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) scored the Privateers' second goal off assists by Troup and Masterman. Castelli scored off a pass from Hempel just 59 seconds later to make it 3-0 and over a minute after that Carsch lit the lamp assisted by junior Greg Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) (Floral Park, N.Y./Saint Mary's). Masterman ended the scoring for Maritime when he found the back of the net off an assist by McManmus.

Freshman Zach Dietrich (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) was strong in goal during the second and third periods, making big saves to secure the victory as Maritime was outshot 35-16 in the last two periods.

The hockey team returns to action on Friday, Nov. 19, when the squad will play host to Rowan at the Parkwood Sports Complex in Great Neck, Long Island, N.Y. The puck drops at 10:15 p.m.
