CASTLETON, Vt. (Oct. 9, 2010) – The Maritime football team moved into sole possession of first place in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference with a 41-28 road victory over Castleton St. Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field. With the win, the Privateers remain undefeated with a 6-0 record, already matching its win total from 2009. They also improve to 3-0 in ECFC action, while Castleton St. loses its first conference game and fall to 2-3 overall (2-1 ECFC).
The Maritime offense tallied 40-plus points for fifth-straight game behind exactly 400 yards rushing and 92 yards passing on the day. Junior Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey)-FB (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) led the team with 162 yards on the ground on 18 carries (9.0 yards per carry). Sophomore quarterback Joe Dickey (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North (N.J.)) (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) had his hand in four touchdowns on the afternoon, rushing for two and passing two to classmates Erik Heedles (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp) (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp) and Fritz Jean (Palm Coast, Fla./Palm Coast (Fla.)) (Palm Coast, Fla./Palm Coast).
Maritime took over possession after a Jason Burry (Attica, N.Y./Attica) (Attica, N.Y./Attica) sack forced the Spartans to fumble on the opening drive of the game just 53 seconds in. A six play, 35-yard drive ended when Dickey hooked up with Heedles for a 16-yard passing TD. Senior Madison Leary (Tavares, Fla./Tavares)'s (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) PAT kick was good and the Privateers took an early 7-0 lead.
The Spartans took advantage of a Maritime fumble later in the opening quarter and scored shortly after on an 8-yard touchdown from quarterback Shane Brozowski to receiver Brandon Boyle to tie the game at 7-7. The Privateers quickly took the lead back on the next drive, when Dickey ended an 11-play, 62-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown run with 15 seconds left in the first quarter. Leary made the score 14-7 with the PAT.
Dickey also scored one of two rushing touchdowns in the second quarter to open the lead to 27-7. Senior running back John Gagliano (Islip Terrace, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Islip Terrace, N.Y./St. Anthony's) ran in a five-yard touchdown with just two seconds remaining to play in the first half.
The Privateers scored on the opening drive of the second half after a 10-play, 65-yard drive that saw senior Greg McGough (Edgewater, Md./Blessed Trinity (Ga.)) (Edgewater, Md./Blessed Trinity) get the majority of the rushes. It was a nine-yard rush then the PAT by Leary that gave Maritime a 34-7 lead. Castleton cut into the lead later in the quarter, scoring on a one-yard rush by Tyler Carpenter to make the score 34-14.
In the fourth and final quarter, the Privateers scored their last points of the game on a 10-yard pass from Dickey to Fritz Jean (Palm Coast, Fla./Palm Coast (Fla.)) that ended an 11-play, 82-yard drive that made the score 41-14. Spartan junior Greg Vreeland took over as quarterback and connected on two late passing TDs, including one as time ran out.
On defense, sophomore linebacker Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) led all players with 13 total tackles (six solo and seven assisted), while senior co-captain Steve Roman (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's by the Sea) recorded six solo and two assisted tackles for eight total. Burry ended the day with two tackles, both sacks for combined losses of 16 yards.
The Maritime football team returns to action next Saturday, Oct.16, when the squad plays host to ECFC-opponent Becker College. The Hawks are 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the ECFC after a loss to Mount Ida on Saturday. Kickoff next week is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
