THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2010) – The Maritime hockey team will play host to its arch-rival from across the Long Island Sound, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point on Saturday, Oct. 9. The puck will drop at 8:45 p.m. at the Parkwood Ice Complex in Great Neck, Long Island, N.Y.
Prior to the 2010-11 campaign, Kings Point joined Maritime in the Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference (MCHC), meaning the Privateers will take on the Mariners twice during the regular season (tomorrow and Mon., Nov. 29 – also at Parkwood). USMMA had previously been in the MCHC over a decade ago.
Tomorrow's game will mark the first non-exhibition contest between the two institutions which share a long rivalry. Alumni from both schools often cross paths during their professional careers on the high seas, sometimes as far as the complete opposite side of the planet, and the Maritime graduates own the bragging rights after the exhibition game played at the end of the 2009-10 campaign that the Privateers won, 5-2.
Maritime is off to a 1-2 start thus far in 2010-11, picking up a season opening victory over Hofstra before falling to Division-II NJIT and Farmingdale State. The Privateers have been led by sophomore Frank Castelli (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) and freshmen Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) and Josh Hempel (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) who each have a goal and two assists for a team-leading three points on the season.
In goal, freshman Zach Dietrich (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) picked up the Privateers only win of the season thus far.
