THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 20, 2010) – The Maritime women's volleyball team lost to conference opponent Old Westbury, 3-0, Tuesday night at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. The match got underway following a Senior Day ceremony honoring the Privateers' lone senior this season, Natalie Warren (Peachtree City, Ga./Homeschooled) (Peachtree, Ga.).
After the pre-match festivities, Maritime took to the court and were led by sophomore Donna Pellegrino (Valley Stream, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) (Valley Stream, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), who recorded a team-high three kills and matched the team-high with two teammates with six digs. Junior Natalie Jackson (Stockton, Calif./Bear Creek) (Stockton, Calif./Bear Creek) and sophomore Jerrica Romero (Bronx, N.Y./Herbert H Lehman) (Bronx, N.Y./Herbert H. Lehman) also picked up six digs in the loss.
The Privateers almost tied the match at one set apiece, as the squad played strong in the second set and held the lead late, but fell by the close score of 25-22. Sophomore Krystal Miranda (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) ended the night with a team-high four assists while picking up three digs.
The Panthers were led by Tynishia George, who had a match-high nine kills and Kristina Giordano, who recorded a double-double with match-highs in assists (20) and digs (10).
Maritime returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 23, when the squad travels to the College of New Rochelle to take part in a non-conference tri-match. At 3 p.m., the Privateers will take on hosts CNR, before finishing the event at 5 p.m. against Medgar Evers.
