THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 8, 2010) – Head coach Jody King will lead his Maritime men's basketball team (5-2, 3-1 Skyline) into the 2010 portion of the season when the squad travels to take on conference-opponent Purchase on Saturday, Jan. 10. Tipoff between the Privateers and the Panthers (5-4, 2-3 Skyline) is set for 1 p.m. at the Panther Pavilion in Purchase, N.Y.
Maritime currently has its highest winning percentage coming out of the winter break than in any of the previous five seasons, winning .714 of their games played thus far. Only in 2007-08, did the Privateers have more wins coming into January (6-4). Maritime has picked up conference victories over Bard, Yeshiva and NYU-Poly, with its only league loss coming to Old Westbury on the road. The Privateers will be looking for their first win away from Riesenberg Gymnasium on Saturday.
Maritime sits in third place in the Skyline behind Old Westbury (5-1) and St. Joseph's (4-1) and is the conference-leader in scoring defense, allowing just 54.0 points per game to opponents, while its +18.4 scoring margin is the highest among the 11 schools (the next closest is St. Joseph's with a +5.0 margin). The Privateers are also league-leaders in five other categories: field goal percentage (.510), field goal percentage defense (.366), 3-point field goal percentage (.403), 3-point field goal percentage defense (.224) and rebounding defense (29.9 per game).
Senior Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) ranks fifth in the Skyline with 14.3 points per game, a mark that leads the squad. Cooper also ranks third in the conference with 4.33 assists per game and is tied for fifth with a .400 3-pointfield goal percentage. Other individual leaders of the Privateers in the Skyline are juniors Gio Hurley and Shamair Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin). Hurley is fourth in the conference with a .571 field goal percentage and ranks sixth with 2.29 steals per game, while Williams is second in the league with a .579 3-point field get percentage and is sixth with 3.57 assists per game.
The Privateers will hit the road again next Tuesday, Jan. 12, when they travel to Newburgh, N.Y. to take on Mount Saint Vincent at 7 p.m. before returning home to host Sage on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m.
