THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 16, 2010) – Junior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) and senior Adedokun Olanrewaju (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) each notched double-doubles, leading the Maritime men's basketball team to an 84-69 victory over local Skyline-foe Mount Saint Vincent Saturday afternoon at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. With the win, the Privateers improve to 8-3 overall (6-2 Skyline), while the Dolphins fall to 6-7 (3-6 Skyline).
Hurley led all players with 17 rebounds and scored 13 points with four steals, while Olanrewaju had a game-high 19 points to go with 10 boards. Junior Shamair Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) tallied 15 points with three steals and two assists, as classmate Justin Bright (Brooklyn, N.Y./Park West) chipped in with 14 points, six boards and a game-high six assists.
The Privateers brought a 41-24 lead into halftime, thanks in large part to scoring 23 points off of Dolphins' turnovers. Maritime held Mount Saint Vincent to 31-percent shooting in the first stanza – 9-for-29.
In the second half, Hurley grabbed down eight boards and the Privateers shot 53.1-percent (17-for-32) to cruise on to the 84-69 victory.
Maritime returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 19, when the squad travels to Patchogue to take on Skyline-foe St. Joseph's. Tipoff against the Eagles is scheduled for 8 p.m.
