THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 14, 2010) – Five Privateers scored in double figures as the Maritime men's basketball improved to a perfect 6-0 at home with a 78-58 win over Skyline-opponent Sage Thursday night at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. With the win, the Privateers improve to 7-3 overall (5-2 Skyline), while the Gators fall to 2-10 (1-7 Skyline).
Senior Adedokun Olanrewaju (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) and junior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) each were a rebound short of a double-doubles, as Olanrewaju led all players with 16 points and Hurly chipped in with 12. Both players shared the game-high in rebounds with junior Trevis Craig (Queens, N.Y./Springfield), as the trio grabbed nine boards apiece. Senior Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) registered double-figure points for the seventh straight game, as he scored 15, which tied junior Shamair Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) for second-best on the night.
Junior Justin Bright (Brooklyn, N.Y./Park West) rounded out the Maritime players in double-figures with 12 points, while recording a team-high four assists. The Privateers out-rebounded Sage, 46-28, and turned 15 offensive boards into 14 second-chance points to the Gators three. Maritime also benefited down low, scoring 56 points in the paint.
The Privateers shot 50-percent from the field on the night – 32-for-64 – and saw the bench contribute 30 points.
Maritime returns to the hardwood Saturday afternoon, when the Privateers play host to local conference-for Mount Saint Vincent (6-5, 3-4 Skyline). Tipoff against the Dolphins is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
