STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2009) – The Maritime women's volleyball team lost two matches on Saturday at a tri-match hosted by the College of Staten Island. The Privateers fell to Old Westbury, 3-0, in the first match, before being edged by CSI, 3-2, in the finale. With the losses, Maritime falls to 1-2 on the young season, while the Panthers improve to 4-9 and the Dolphins move to 3-5.
In the match against Old Westbury, sophomore Natalie Jackson led the way for the Privateers with eight assists, five digs and four kills, while junior libero Natalie Warren tallied 11 digs. The scores of the match were 25-16, 25-10, and 25-15.
Against the hosts, CSI, Maritime fell behind 2-0 quickly but fought back to win sets three and four to tie the match up and force a decisive fifth and final set. Jackson again led the Privateers with 16 assists and five service aces, while senior Marissa Danzy recorded four kills and six total blocks. The scores of the match were 25-17, 25-15, 20-25, 25-27, and 15-5.
The volleyball team returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 22, when the squad hosts the College of New Rochelle. First serve between the Privateers and the Blue Angels is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
