THROGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 10, 2009) – The Maritime football team lost its home-opener to Wagner, 41-10, on Thursday at Reinhart Field. With the loss, the Privateers fall to an even 1-1 on the season, while the Seahawks also end up with a 1-1 record.
“I was extremely proud of how our team played tonight," said head coach Clayton Kendrick-Holems. "We stood toe-to-toe with a Division I, scholarship football team for three-and-a-half quarters and our team fought to the very end. Hopefully we can build on this effort as we move into conference play.”
Sophomore Jamie Spanopoulos-FB (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) led the Maritime offense with 119 rushing yards and scored the lone Privateer touchdown of the night on a 12-yard run. That TD brought the score to 20-10, Wagner, with 24 seconds left in the third quarter. On defense, sophomore Keith Barnes-LB (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) and freshman Pat Lasher-LB (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) led the way with 4.5 tackles apiece.
The score was 13-0 at the half, after Maritime failed to score after a 17-play, 75-yard drive up field in the second quarter. A run up the middle by Spanopolus on fourth and goal was stopped on the one-yard line by Wagner as time ran off the clock ending the first half. The Privateers had another opportunity to cash in for six early in the third, but an 11-play, 41-yard drive ended with just three points after sophomore Madison Leary-K (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) kicked the first field goal of the year for Maritime from 25 yards out to make the score 20-3.
The Seahawks ran away with the game in the fourth quarter, putting up 21 points on three rushing touchdowns in the last eight minutes of the game.
The Privateers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 19, when the team travels across the East River to play fellow merchant marine academy Kings Point. Kickoff between Maritime and the Mariners is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Captain James Harvey Tomb Field.
