Olanrewaju's Double-Double Leads Privateers Over NYU-Poly, 76-49

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Dec. 8, 2009) – The Maritime men's basketball team defeated conference-opponent NYU-Poly, 76-49, Tuesday night at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium to close out the 2009 portion of the schedule. With the victory, the Privateers improve to 5-2 overall (3-1 Skyline), while the Fighting Blue Jays fall to 1-3 (0-2 Skyline).

 

Maritime was led by senior big man Adedokun Olanrewaju (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin), who recorded a double-double with a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds. The forward was 7-of-9 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free throw line, while picking up two assists and two steals. Two other Privateers nearly recorded double-doubles on the night as junior Shamair Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) had 13 points and nine boards and senior Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) scored 15 and led all players with a season-high eight assists.

 

The Privateers started strong right off the tip, building up a 20-7 lead just 6:10 into the game. The squad shot 63.0-percent in the first half, compared to Poly's 38.7-percent, and brought a 42-28 lead into the half.

 

Junior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) scored 12 of his 14 points in the second stanza as Maritime outscored the Blue Jays 34-21, en route to the win.

 

Maritime is now done for the fall 2009 semester and will begin play again in the New Year. The first game back is on Saturday, Dec. 9, when the Privateers travel to face the Panthers of SUNY Purchase at 1 p.m.
