KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 22, 2009) – The Maritime men's basketball team fell to the Merchant Marine Academy, 67-62, Sunday night at the Mariners' Liebertz Gymnasium. With the defeat, the Privateers move to an even 1-1 on the season, while Kings Point improves to 2-0.
The Privateers were led by junior Quamel Lyerly (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence), who matched the game-high with 14 points off the bench, including 10 in the second half. Classmate Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) also scored in double-figures for Maritime with 12 points and brought down a team-high six boards. Lyerly also led all players in the game with four steals, while Hurley was right behind him in the category with three.
At 17:14 of the second stanza, Lyerly hit a jumper to give Maritime its first lead since 9:40 of the first. The Privateers held the lead throughout most of the second, but late turnovers and calls against Maritime proved costly and what was once an 11-point lead with 11:24 to play slipped away and Kings Point took the lead for good in the closing minutes.
Despite the loss, Maritime shot 48.2-percent from the field compared to Merchant Marines' 42.9-percent. However, the Mariners' 85.7-percent clip from the free throw line helped tremendously in their victory.
For the Mariners, three players each scored 14 points, while Matt Hueber recorded a game-high 13 rebounds.
Maritime returns to the court on Tuesday, when the squad plays host to St. Joseph's of Brooklyn at 7 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
