BETHPAGE, NY – On Friday afternoon, the Maritime College men's and women's cross country teams began the 2026 campaign at the Adelphi Invitational from Bethpage State Park. Competing against field that included Division I, II and III opponents, the Privateers had an impressive showing on both sides. Maritime took 10
th overall and second among Division III squads in the men's race, while the women's team was 12
th overall and second among Division III programs.
In his first collegiate meet,
Chase Miller (West Islip, NY) was the top non-Division I runner. He was 23
rd overall (with 20 of the 22 finishers ahead of him coming from either Cornell or Iona, two top Division I teams). Miller completed the 8000-meter course in 26:24.5.
Crossing the line second for the Privateers was another newcomer—
Mickey Beser (Bel Air, MD). He ended up 74
th overall in 30:01.4.
Neil Landow (Pamlico County, NC) placed 94
th in 31:57.0, while
Philip Downes (Levittown, NY) secured 107
th place in 33:35.1. Maritime's fifth scoring runner was
Michael Abbamonte (Bohemia, NY), who finished 120
th in 35:25.5.
The Privateers notched a total score of 311 points to rank 10
th out of 18 teams. The only Division III program to beat Maritime was Merchant Marine, which placed sixth overall with 215 points. Cornell put nine runners in the top 12 to easily win the team title.
Cindy Chen (Huntington Station, NY) led the Privateer women with a 55
th-place showing. She ran 6000 meters in 27:02.7.
Erin Doyle (Munich, Germany) placed 70
th in 31:04.3, while
Olivia Capobianco (Massapequa, NY) (75
th, 32:30.1),
Nicole Mejia (Garden City, NY) (76
th, 32:40.7) and
Eily Kochon (Ulster Park, NY) (77
th, 32:56.4) crossed the line within 26 seconds of each other.
As a team, Maritime tallied 353 points, which was 12
th out of 17 teams. The Privateers were edged by Merchant Marine by 21 points for the top spot among Division III squads. Cornell also took first overall on the women's side, finishing with 33 total points.
Up next for Maritime is the Purchase College Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 12. Competition is scheduled to get underway at 9:30 a.m.
