NEW HAVEN, CT – On Wednesday night, the Maritime College men's soccer team traveled to Albertus Magnus for its final game before the start of Skyline Conference play. The Falcons (3-3-0) took the lead late in the first half, then added a late penalty kick goal to notch a 2-0 win over the Privateers (1-3-0) at Celentano Field.
Maritime's best chance of the first half came in the 33
rd minute, when
Jeferson Blanco's (San Pedro Sula, Honduras) attempt was saved by Albertus Magnus goalkeeper Patrick Cavalieri. The Falcons then broke through in the 43
rd minute. Andres Mendez-Suarez connected with Lorenzo Lauria, who put it into the back of the net for the game's first goal. It remained 1-0 until the Falcons were awarded a penalty kick in the waning seconds. Kalonji Cowan stepped up to the spot and converted, making it a final score of 2-0.
Aidan Slovensky (Manorville, NY) (1-3-0) was credited with six saves in a losing effort. Cavalieri (3-3-0), meanwhile, made three saves while notching his second clean sheet of the season.
The Privateers (0-0-0 Skyline) begin their Skyline Conference schedule at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday against St. Joseph's Brooklyn (1-1-2, 0-0-0 Skyline). The contest will be played at Reinhart Field, with the Bears serving as the home team.
