PURCHASE, NY – One week after finishing as the top non-Division I runner at the Adelphi Invitational,
Chase Miller (West Islip, NY) of the Maritime College men's cross country team was the overall winner at the Purchase College Invitational on Saturday. Behind Miller's first-place finish, the Privateers took fourth in the team standings. The Maritime women, meanwhile, placed fifth as a squad.
Running on a 6000-meter short course around the Purchase College campus, Miller posted a time of 19:34.4.
Mickey Beser (Bel Air, MD) just missed joining him in the top 10. He ended up 11
th overall in 21:19.0. The Privateers' top four finishers were all newcomers, with
Neil Landow (Pamlico County, NC) securing 28
th place (22:58.8) and
Philip Downes (Levittown, NY) crossing the line in 45
th (24:15.4).
Michael Abbamonte (Bohemia, NY) rounded out Maritime's scoring quintet in 54
th place (25:21.2).
The Privateers tallied 110 points in the team standings, which was good for fourth place out of 12 schools. Miller, meanwhile, was the top individual among 110 finishers.
On the women's side,
Cindy Chen (Huntington Station, NY) led the way for Maritime. She completed 4000 meters in 17:52.4, which was good for 11
th place.
Eily Kochon (Ulster Park, NY) finished 29
th in 19:44.5, while
Erin Doyle (Munich, Germany) placed 33
rd in a time of 19:56.0. The Privateers' other scorers were
Emily Bryant (Hilliard, OH) (40
th, 20:41.9) and
Olivia Capobianco (Massapequa, NY) (42
nd, 21:02.3).
As a team, Maritime finished fifth out of 11 programs. The Privateers recorded 155 points, just six points behind fourth-place St. Joseph's LI.
After taking next weekend off, Maritime returns to action on Sept. 26 at the Golden Eagle Invitational. The meet will be held at Stony Brook University, with the women's race scheduled for 11 a.m., followed by the men's race at 12 p.m.
