THROGGS NECK, NY – After playing four straight road contests, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team returned to Reinhart Field on Wednesday night for a Skyline Conference matchup with Mount St. Mary. And the Privateers celebrated their homecoming with a dominant win. Maritime (4-7, 2-0 Skyline) scored eight goals in the first quarter and had a 15-0 lead at halftime of an eventual 19-3 victory over the Knights (3-7, 1-1 Skyline).
Ryan Hannaford (Bayport, NY) notched the game's first goal at the 11:07 mark of the first quarter, then
Brody Smith (Rehoboth Beach, DE) made it 2-0 after causing a turnover and taking it all the way for a score. With 7:31 left in the opening period,
Jack Surian (Bay Shore, NY) started a run of five straight tallies in little over five minutes that increased the advantage to 8-0. Hannaford extended the rally with two goals 33 seconds apart early in the second quarter, and the Privateers outscored Mount St. Mary 7-0 in the period to build a 15-0 cushion at the break.
The Knights cut their deficit to 15-2 before
Peter Horstmann (Lindenhurst, NY) and
Rex Lagademo (Marlboro, MD) each found the back of the net. It remained that way until there was 6:00 left in the fourth quarter, when Horstmann notched his second tally of the game. After
Joseph Finn (Warwick, NY) recorded his first collegiate goal, Mount St. Mary's Devin Lanzer scored late to pull the Knights within 19-3 at the finish.
In addition to scoring a goal,
Nick Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY) distributed six assists for Maritime. Hannaford paced the Privateers with five goals, while
Thomas McCarvill (Port Washington, NY) had four goals and two assists.
Michael Weigand (Massapequa, NY), meanwhile, contributed a goal and two assists.
Christopher Laino (West Islip, NY) went 10-for-16 on faceoffs and gathered a team-best six ground balls. Smith collected five ground balls and added a career-best six caused turnovers.
Four different goalkeepers saw action, with starter
Cristian Scaffaro (Brookhaven, NY) (4-5) earning the win. He made five saves and didn't allow a goal in the first half.
James O'Malley (Northport, NY) recorded three third-quarter saves before
Brendan Kavanagh (White Plains, NY) and
Cole Schiefelbein (Rockville Centre, NY) split the fourth quarter.
Robby Maurer and Hayden Mitchell scored the other two Mount St. Mary goals. Four different Knights gathered five ground balls apiece, including Joseph Corallo, who finished 14-for-26 on faceoffs. Goalkeeper Kenny Leen (3-7) was credited with 11 saves in a losing effort.
Up next, Maritime visits Merchant Marine (6-4, 2-0 Skyline) at 11 a.m. on Saturday. It will be the first meeting between the teams since the Mariners defeated the Privateers in last season's Skyline semifinals.
