THROGGS NECK, NY – Last year, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team set a program record with 28 goals in a victory over St. Joseph's LI. In this season's matchup with the Golden Eagles, the Privateers nearly matched that total. Maritime (6-7, 4-0 Skyline) rolled to its third straight win, a 26-3 triumph over St. Joseph's LI (3-7, 0-4 Skyline) at Reinhart Field on Tuesday night.
With goalkeeper John Marino keeping the Privateers off the board, the Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead on Caden Stubba's tally at the 4:41 mark of the first quarter.
Nick Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY) finally snuck one past Marino with 3:03 left in the period, starting a run of four Maritime goals in 75 seconds that gave the Privateers a 4-1 advantage. Maritime then outscored St. Joseph's LI 11-0 in the second quarter to extend the margin to 15-1 at halftime.
After the Privateers increased their cushion to 17-1, Najee Henderson snapped the Golden Eagles' scoring drought with 9:39 remaining in the third quarter. Maritime responded with four straight tallies to open up a 20-2 lead entering the final period. Stubba made it 20-3 early in the fourth quarter before the Privateers rattled off six unanswered goals to cap off the 26-3 victory.
Thomas McCarvill (Port Washington, NY) finished with nine points on seven goals and two assists. His seven goals were one off the single-game school record. Uzakewicz, meanwhile, recorded his second hat trick of the season to go along with seven assists. He now has 21 assists in Maritime's last three games.
Ryan Hannaford (Bayport, NY) found the back of the net four times and added an assist, while
Nick LiPuma (Bayport, NY) also posted a hat trick.
Christopher Laino (West Islip, NY) went 14-for-21 on faceoffs and picked up nine ground balls, as the Privateers held a 45-21 edge in that category.
Jack Kane (Buffalo, NY) added three ground balls while causing three turnovers.
Cristian Scaffaro (Brookhaven, NY) (6-5) earned the win after playing the first half in net. He was credited with two saves and allowed one goal.
Marino (3-7) ended up with 20 saves in a losing effort for St. Joseph's LI. He also gathered a team-best four ground balls. Stubba was involved in all three Dolphins goals, scoring twice and assisting on the other.
Maritime concludes its home schedule by welcoming Mount St. Vincent (6-7, 3-1 Skyline) to Reinhart Field at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Privateers will honor their senior class prior to the contest.
