Maritime Clinches First-Round Bye

THROGGS NECK, NY – On Saturday, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team (7-7, 5-0 Skyline) wrapped up its regular season home schedule by posting a 22-11 victory over Mount St. Vincent (6-8, 3-2 Skyline) at Reinhart Field.  With the win, the Privateers clinched at least the No. 3 seed and a first-round bye in the Skyline Conference Tournament.

After the Dolphins' Alfred Lamptey took the opening faceoff down for a goal, Maritime rattled off five straight tallies to close out the first quarter.  The Privateers extended their advantage to 9-1 before Harrison Chapman stopped the run midway through the second quarter.  However, Maritime scored five times in the final 3:18 of the first half to increase the margin to 14-2 at the break.

The Privateers continued their onslaught in the third quarter, rattling off six straight goals to build a 20-2 cushion.  Mount St. Vincent got a man-up tally from Chai Dunlap late in the third quarter, sparking a rally where the Dolphins would outscore Maritime 9-2 over the final 18:30.  The final margin was 22-11, as the Privateers sent seniors Ryan Grider (Oak Ridge, NJ), Thomas Kennedy (Orangeburg, NY), Kymani McDonald (Elmont, NY) and Nick Spista (White Plains, NY) out with a win in their final regular season home game.

McDonald scored his first collegiate goal in the second quarter while also picking up two ground balls and causing a turnover.  Nick Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY) finished with 11 points on six goals and five assists to go along with four ground balls.  Thomas McCarvill (Port Washington, NY) found the back of the net four times, and Ryan Hannford (Bayport, NY) notched eight points (two goals, six assists).  Michael Weigand (Massapequa, NY) had a hat trick, while Michael Colaianni (Huntingtown, MD) recorded the first two tallies of his college career.

Christopher Laino (West Islip, NY) collected a team-best five ground balls, with Brody Smith (Rehoboth Beach, DE) and Teddy Dannhauser (Huntington, NY) securing four ground balls apiece.  Starting goalkeeper Cristian Scaffaro (Brookhaven, NY) (7-5) played the first half and earned the win.  He made four saves.  James O'Malley (Northport, NY) was credited with seven saves in the third quarter before Brendan Kavanagh (White Plains, NY) and Cole Schiefelbein (Rockville Centre, NY) split the fourth quarter goalkeeping duties.

For Mount St. Vincent, Chai Dunlap led the way with four goals while adding four ground balls and four caused turnovers.  Thomas Vallely and Nigel Walker each tallied three points on a goal and two assists.  Alfred Lamptey, meanwhile, went 12-for-15 on faceoffs and picked up a game-high nine ground balls.  Max Mills (6-8) was credited with 11 saves in the loss.

Maritime visits defending Skyline champion Farmingdale (11-3, 4-1 Skyline) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.  The Privateers will secure the No. 1 seed and home field advantage throughout the Skyline Tournament with a victory.
