THROGGS NECK, NY – Michelle Pecoraro (Kings Park, NY) tallied 12 points, the fourth-highest single-game total in program history, on Wednesday night, as the Maritime College women's lacrosse team (1-4, 1-2 Skyline) notched a 21-6 victory over Purchase (0-7, 0-3 Skyline) at Reinhart Field. She had seven points in the first quarter alone and finished with six goals and six assists in the Privateers' first win of the season.
Pecoraro assisted on five of Maritime's first seven goals, then scored twice herself to put the Privateers in front 10-2 at the end of the opening period. Five different Maritime players notched first-quarter tallies. The Privateers found the back of the net six more times in the second quarter while holding the Panthers scoreless, extending their advantage to 16-2.
The scoring run reached 14-0 on third-quarter goals by
Paige Grider (Oak Ridge, NJ) and Pecoraro before Purchase rattled off three straight tallies to pull within 18-5. However, Pecoraro was involved in all three of the Privateers' fourth-quarter goals, finding the back of the net twice and assisting on the third, as Maritime increased the margin to 21-5. Catie Cihos added a late score for the Panthers, making the final score 21-6.
Grider notched six points on four goals and two assists to go along with eight draw controls.
Eva Garcia (Rockville Centre, NY) had four goals and three draw controls, while
Mia Brandenstein (West Islip, NY) recorded her first career hat trick. She also controlled three draws. In addition to scoring her first collegiate goal,
Alexa Nolan (Queens, NY) paced the Privateers with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Starting goalkeeper
Hannah Honor (Smithtown, NY) (1-4) earned the win after making two first half saves before being relieved by
Clio Liff (Bronx, NY), who had three saves in the second half.
Cihos scored four of Purchase's six goals and added three draw controls. Julieth Velasquez finished with a goal and an assist while leading the Panthers with four ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Savannah Haynes (0-7) also picked up four ground balls to go along with six saves.
On Friday, Maritime wraps up non-conference play with a 5 p.m. matchup against Ramapo (4-6). It will mark the end of the Privateers' season-opening six-game homestand.
