ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team took on St. Mary's MD for the first time in program history. The Seahawks (4-2) used a 12-0 run to turn a 1-1 tie into a 13-1 advantage en route to a 20-5 victory over the Privateers (2-2) at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.
After St. Mary's MD opened the scoring at the 9:26 mark of the first quarter,
Joseph Fazio (Massapequa, NY) responded for Maritime two minutes later. However, the Seahawks immediately responded, with Joshua Martel finding the back of the net just 15 seconds after Fazio's tally. That was the first of nine unanswered goals for the Seahawks to end the first half, as St. Mary's MD took a 10-1 lead into the break.
The Seahawks extended their cushion to 13-1 before
Michael Weigand (Massapequa, NY) snapped the Privateers' scoreless drought with 3:35 remaining in the third quarter.
Thomas McCarvil (Port Washington, NY) then put one home with 53 seconds to go in the period, trimming Maritime's deficit to 14-3. However, St. Mary's MD outscored the Privateers 6-2 in the fourth quarter to notch a 20-5 win.
McCarvil
scored twice for Maritime, while Fazio, Wiegand and
Nicholas Spada (Parsippany, NJ) each added a goal.
Cristian Scaffaro (Brookhaven, NY) (2-2) was credited with 13 saves to go along with a team-best three ground balls.
James O'Malley (Northport, NY) played just over 11 minutes in net, allowing three tallies and making two saves, before
Cole Schiefelbein (Rockville Centre, NY) finished up between the pipes and gave up the final St. Mary's MD goal.
Gavin McKay posted five goals for the Seahawks. Declan Horan added three goals and an assist, while Joshua Martel also had four points on two goals and two assists. Owen Wynot recorded a hat trick for St. Mary's MD, as well. Matteo Ciccarello, meanwhile, went 24-for-26 on faceoffs and secured 13 ground balls. Joe Szymanski corralled seven ground balls, and Adam Martin caused three turnovers. Goalkeeper Ty Spencer (4-2) played the first 52 minutes and earned the win. He notched six saves.
Up next for the Privateers is their annual home game against Geneseo. Maritime welcomes the Knights (1-3) to Reinhart Field next Saturday at 1 p.m.
