THROGGS NECK, NY – There were six ties and three lead changes in the Maritime College men's lacrosse team's matchup with Geneseo on Saturday. A
Ryan Hannaford (Bayport, NY) goal brough the Privateers (2-3) within 10-9 midway through the third quarter, but the Knights (2-3) ended the period with three straight tallies to open up a 13-9 advantage in an eventual 14-11 victory at Reinhart Field.
After Maritime jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by
Michael Weigand (Massapequa, NY) and
Nick LiPuma (Bayport, NY), Geneseo scored three straight to go in front.
Thomas McCarvil (Port Washington, NY) tied it with 1:42 left in the first quarter before assisting on Hannaford's man-down tally that gave the Privateers a 4-3 edge as time expired in the period. Hannaford broke a 6-6 deadlock with 9:13 remaining until halftime, but the Knights' Jake Perinchief responded with back-to-back tallies, including one at the 43-second mark to put Geneseo in front, 8-7 at the break.
The Knights extended their cushion to 10-7 before McCarvil and Hannaford each found the back of the net to cut the margin to one, 10-9. However, Geneseo scored three times in the final 3:48 of the third quarter to take its biggest lead of the game, 13-9. McCarvil and Hannaford brought Maritime within two at 13-11, but would get no closer, as Aksel Stanat finished off the Knights' 14-11 win.
McCarvil finished with six points on four goals and two assists. He also picked up three ground balls and caused two turnovers. Hannaford had four goals and an assist to go along with three ground balls, while LiPuma notched a goal and an assist. In addition to recording a goal,
Tyler Mahood (Sleepy Hollow, NY) tied for the team lead with four ground balls.
Brody Smith (Rehoboth Beach, DE) collected four ground balls, as well. Goalkeeper
Cristian Scafarro (Brookhaven, NY) (2-3), meanwhile, was credited with four ground balls and 10 saves for the Privateers.
Ronnie Trebing led Geneseo with four goals. Perichief found the back of the net three times, while Stanat had two goals and two assists. Ryan Trebing contributed four assists and four ground balls, and Ian Leahey notched three points on two goals and an assist. Cole Parker went 11-for-14 on faceoffs and gathered a game-high eight ground balls. In addition, Jake Starkey finished 13-for-14 at the faceoff X. Goalkeeper Ben Bradshaw (2-3) made 14 saves in the winning effort.
Maritime returns to action on Wednesday, when Hartford (2-3) visit Reinhart Field at 7 p.m. It will be the first-ever meeting between the teams.
