THROGGS NECK, NY – On Wednesday night, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team took on Hartford for the first time in program history. A late man-up tally proved to be the difference, as the Hawks (3-3) came away with an 11-10 win over the Privateers (2-4) at Reinhart Field.
Maritime got off to a fast start, leading 3-1 after the first quarter and extending that advantage to 5-1 on a goal by
Thomas McCarvill (Port Washington, NY) at 12:44 mark of the second quarter. After Michael Novotny found the back of the net three straight times for Hartford,
Michael Weigand (Massapequa, NY) made it 6-4 with 2:41 remaining until halftime. The Privateers took timeout with 33 seconds left in the half and held for one shot, which
Ryan Hannaford (Bayport, NY) converted with six seconds to go, increasing Maritime's cushion to 7-4 at the break.
The Hawks again pulled within one before Weigand's second tally of the game put the Privateers up 8-6 six minutes into the second half. Hartford tied it at 8-8 early in the fourth quarter before Maritime regained the lead on a
Joseph Fazio (Massapequa, NY) tally. The Privateers went ahead 10-9 on McCarvill's second goal of the game, but Hartford immediately countered. A
Brody Smith (Rehoboth Beach, DE) penalty with 3:13 put Hartford a man up, and the Hawks took advantage. Gavin Pelletier gave Hartford its only lead of the night just as the penalty was about to expire. That would turn out to be the game-winner in the Hawks' 11-10 victory.
Three different Maritime players finished with two goals in the game. McCarvill and
Tyler Mahood (Sleepy Hollow, NY) both had three points on two goals and an assist, while Wiegand also notched a pair of tallies.
Nick Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY) distributed six assists, one shy of his single-game program record.
Christopher Laino (West Islip, NY) was credited with a team-best five ground balls, and Smith caused four turnovers.
Cristian Scaffaro (Brookhaven, NY) (2-4), meanwhile, made 11 saves in a losing effort.
For Hartford, Novotny led the way with five goals. Pelletier recorded two goals (including the game-winner) and an assist, and Nick Forgione also tallied three points on a goal and two assists. Ian Reynolds won 18 faceoffs and collected 12 ground balls, as the Hawks held a 39-21 edge in that category. Hartford goalkeeper CJ Ledwick (2-3) notched seven saves.
After playing four of their first six at home, the Privateers hit the road for their next four games. Maritime begins the stretch by visiting Kean (5-4) next Wednesday at 5 p.m.
