THROGGS NECK, NY – After a break of more than two weeks, the Maritime College women's lacrosse team returned to action on Tuesday for its first conference game of the season. The Privateers (0-3, 0-1 Skyline) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but St. Joseph's LI (2-6, 2-0 Skyline) eventually pulled away for a 21-6 victory at Reinhart Field.
Eva Garcia (Rockville Centre, NY) put Maritime in front with a pair of tallies in the first 1:16 of the contest. The Golden Eagles ended the first quarter with eight straight goals, however, then extended their advantage to 13-2 midway through the second quarter. Garcia snapped the St. Joseph's LI run at the 4:56 mark of the second quarter, and
Mia Brandenstein (West Islip, NY) found the back of the net with 20 seconds left until halftime to pull the Privateers within 15-4 at intermission.
The Golden Eagles extended the margin to 18-4 before
Paige Grider (Oak Ridge, NJ) scored with 1:48 remaining in the third quarter. After Garcia made it 20-5 with her fourth tally of the game at the 8:36 mark of the fourth quarter, Emily Grace Passaro wrapped up the scoring for St. Joseph's LI.
In addition to notching four times, Garcia led Maritime with four draw controls and caused two turnovers. Brandenstein had a goal and an assist to go along with three draw controls, while Grider also recorded a goal and an assist.
Daniella Jimenez (Copiague, NY) tallied a team-high four caused turnovers and added three ground balls, and
Sara Williams (Oceanside, NY) also collected three ground balls.
Hannah Honor (Smithtown, NY) (0-3) made 12 saves in a losing effort.
For the Golden Eagles, Sabrina Doyle posted seven points on five goals and two assists. She added nine ground balls and three caused turnovers. Kaitlyn Ippolito finished with four goals, three assists and five draw controls, and Kayla Soldano also found the back of the net four times. Julia Stolba, meanwhile, controlled eight draws to go along with three caused turnovers and three points (two goals, one assist). Goalkeeper Maggie Harding (2-5) was credited with six saves.
Up next for the Privateers is a 6 p.m. matchup with Manhattanville (3-5, 1-1 Skyline) at Reinhart Field on Friday.
