THROGGS NECK, NY – Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) became the newest member of the Maritime College men's basketball program's 1,000-point club on Wednesday night. Needing four points to reach the milestone, he got there with a three-pointer at the 18:08 mark of the second half in the Privateers' matchup with Yeshiva at Riesenberg Gymnasium. Anderson finished with nine points for Maritime (10-10, 6-5 Skyline), which fell to the Maccabees (13-8, 12-0 Skyline) by a 94-78 count.
Zion Williams (Indianapolis, IN) had a career-high 29 points, his fifth straight 20-point game. He added eight rebounds, seven assists and two blocks.
Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY), meanwhile, posted 18 points, five boards, three assists and three steals.
Sean Kivlan (Floral Park, NY) contributed 11 points off the bench for the Privateers, who shot a combined 44.3 percent (31-of-70) from the field. Maritime was 7-for-22 (31.8 percent) from long range and 9-for-14 (64.3 percent) at the free throw line.
Yeshiva quickly jumped out to a 9-4 lead, but the Privateers responded with an 8-2 run and went in front, 12-11, on
Matthew O'Sullivan's (Rockaway Beach, NY) layup with 13:45 left in the first half. However, Dothan Bardichev hit a trey on the other end to spark a 7-0 Maccabees rally that gave Yeshiva an 18-12 advantage. Maritime got back within two at 24-22 on a Williams layup with 6:57 remaining until halftime before the Maccabees rattled off 10 straight points to increase their cushion to 34-22. Yeshiva led by eight, 45-37, at the break.
A three-point play by Devaney cut the Privateers' deficit to seven, 55-48, with 14:44 remaining, but Maritime would get no closer the rest of the way. Yeshiva opened up its biggest lead of the game, 82-62, with 5:42 left. Williams sank a trey with 1:42 remaining before a Yoav Osekla layup capped the scoring in the Maccabees' 94-78 victory.
Oselka recorded a 27-point, 12-rebound double-double for Yeshiva. He also distributed four assists. Zevi Samet tallied 24 points and six boards, while Max Zakheim finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Roy Itcovichi had 10 points, eight boards and four steals, and Bardichev added 10 points. Yair Dovrat, meanwhile, handed out 13 assists to go along with six rebounds. As a team, the Maccabees shot 54.9 percent (39-of-71) from the floor, 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from downtown, and 83.3 percent (10-of-12) at the charity stripe. In addition, Yeshiva outrebounded the Privateers 46-29.
Four of the Privateers' five remaining games are on the road, starting with a 1 p.m. matchup at St. Joseph's Brooklyn (7-13, 4-7 Skyline) on Saturday. Maritime won the first meet of the season with the Bears, 92-74, at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Dec. 13.
