Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Privateers Set Single-Game Program Record For Three-Pointers

BROOKLYN, NY – On Jan. 28, the Maritime College men's basketball team tied the single-game program record for three-pointers in a win over Mount St. Vincent.  On Saturday at St. Joseph's Brooklyn, the Privateers bettered that mark.  Maritime (11-10, 7-5 Skyline) sank 15 treys in the contest, a 90-73 victory over the Bears (7-14, 4-8 Skyline) at the Hill Center.

The previous school record was 14 three-pointers, which the Privateers have done three times.  Maritime got there for the fourth time when Franklin Santos (Ossining, NY) sank a trey with 1:46 remaining.  On the Privateers' next possession, Jaylen Jean-Louis (Freeport, NY) drained the record-breaking triple.  That gave Maritime a 24-point lead, 90-66, in an eventual 17-point triumph that closed out a season sweep of St. Joseph's Brooklyn.

Zion Williams (Indianapolis, IN) recorded his third double-double of the season, notching 27 points and 13 rebounds.  He also handed out four assists.  Chris Zaveckas (Merrick, NY) had a career-high 14 points, while Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) finished with 13 points, seven boards and three blocks.  Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) added 11 points, four assists and three steals, and Sean Kivlan (Floral Park, NY) grabbed five rebounds to go along with eight points.  As a team, the Privateers shot 45.5 percent (35-of-77) from the field, 40.5 percent (15-of-37) from long range, and 41.7 percent (5-of-12) at the free throw line.

Maritime took control from the start, jumping out to a 12-4 lead barely three minutes into the contest.  After the Privateers extended that advantage to 24-8 on a Devaney layup with 12:35 left in the first half, the Bears countered with a 14-9 run to get within 33-22.  Maritime pushed the margin back to 17 points at 44-27 on a Williams trey with 2:27 remaining until halftime before St. Joseph's Brooklyn rallied to make it a 12-point game, 44-32, at halftime.

A Colin Mills three-pointer to open the second half brought the Bears within nine, 44-35, but treys by Kivlan and Zaveckas started a 16-2 Privateers run over the next three minutes.  Another Zaveckas triple increased the margin to 26 points, 65-39, and the lead reached a game-high 29 points when Ayden Alleyne's (Brentwood, NY) offensive rebound and tip-in made it 81-52 with 7:15 to go.  After the record-breaking Jean-Louis trey, St. Joseph's Brooklyn ended the game on a 7-0 run to pull within 17 points, 90-73, at the final buzzer.

Mills led the Bears with 15 points.  Jacob Idowu contributed 13 points and five rebounds, and Timothy Richardson tallied 12 points off the bench.  Justin Munson had six boards to go along with four assists, while Austin Wrynn corralled 12 rebounds.  As a team, St. Joseph's Brooklyn outrebounded Maritime 54-48 and shot 31.1 percent (23-of-74) from the floor.  The Bears were 8-for-28 (28.6 percent) from downtown and 19-for-29 (65.5 percent) at the charity stripe.

Up next, Maritime travels to St. Joseph's LI (10-11, 6-6 Skyline) on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. matchup.  The Golden Eagles won the first meeting of the season between the teams, 76-68 at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Jan. 3.
