Privateers Suffer First Loss of Season

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's lacrosse team welcomed Salve Regina to Reinhart Field on Saturday afternoon.  Playing their second straight home game after Wednesday's scheduled matchup at Stevens was postponed, the Privateers (2-1) fell for the first time this season, dropping a 14-6 decision to the Seahawks (3-0).

After Salve Regina jumped out to a 3-0 lead, Thomas McCarvil (Port Washington, NY) got Maritime on the board with 12 seconds left in the first quarter.  The Seahawks increased their advantage to 6-1 before Nick LiPuma (Bayport, NY) scored a man-up tally with 8:20 remaining until halftime.  However, Salve Regina responded with three straight goals to make a 9-2 game.  Ryan Grider (Oak Ridge, NJ) then found the back of the net at the 41-second mark of the second quarter to bring the Privateers within 9-3 at the break.

Tyler Mahood (Sleepy Hollow, NY) and McCarvil notched back-to-back goals early in the third quarter, trimming Maritime's deficit to 9-5.  The Seahawks outscored the Privateers 5-1 over the game's final 20 minutes, though, to post a 14-6 victory.

McCarvil and LiPuma each recorded a pair of tallies for Maritime.  LiPuma also had four ground balls and caused two turnovers.  In addition to collecting four ground balls, Privateers goalkeeper Cristian Scaffaro (Brookhaven, NY) (2-1) made a career-best 14 saves.

Daniel Naglieri finished with six goals and an assist while adding three ground balls for Salve Regina.  Chris Koltzan tallied five points on two goals and three assists, and Heath Sumwalt scored twice.  Adam Laber, meanwhile, secured a game-high six ground balls.  Goalkeeper Griffin Caiozzo (3-0) was credited with two ground balls and an assist to go along with nine saves.

Maritime returns to action next Saturday, when the Privateers travel to St. Mary's MD (3-1) for a 1 p.m. matchup.  It will be the first-ever meeting between the schools.
