THROGGS NECK, NY – On Saturday, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team opened its home schedule with a matchup against New Paltz.
Ryan Hannford (Bayport, NY) and
Thomas McCarvil (Port Washington, NY) scored five goals apiece to lead the Privateers (2-0) to a 15-7 victory over the Hawks (0-1) at Reinhart Field.
After the teams traded early goals, Hannaford put one home off an assist by
Nick LiPuma (Bayport, NY) midway through the first quarter. LiPuma added a tally to make it 3-1 before back-to-back New Paltz goals leveled the score at 3-3. However, Hannaford connected with
Tyler Mahood (Sleepy Hollow, NY) for a go-ahead tally with 10 seconds left in the opening period. McCarvil and Hannaford then increased the advantage to 6-3 at the 5:43 mark of the second quarter. Maritime held a 7-4 cushion at halftime.
The margin increased to 9-5 when Hannaford and
Nick Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY) found the back of the net 16 seconds apart in the third quarter. The Hawks closed within 11-7 after three quarters, but the Privateers outscored New Paltz 4-0 in the final period. McCarvil had three fourth-quarter goals, including a man-up tally with 1:42 left to close out the scoring in the 15-7 triumph.
Hannaford finished with seven points, handing out a pair of assists to go along with his five goals. McCarvil, meanwhile, has found the back of the net eight times in Maritime's first two games, including five scores on Saturday. LiPuma and Mahood each tallied two goals and an assist, while Uzakewicz recorded a goal and two assists.
Joseph Fazio (Massapequa, NY) added two assists for the Privateers.
Ryan Giambone (Coram, NY) collected a game-high seven ground balls, as Maritime held a 35-20 edge in that category.
Nick Spista (White Plains, NY) secured six ground balls, and
Brody Smith (Rehoboth Beach, DE) gathered three ground balls to go along with five caused turnovers. Goalkeeper
Cristian Scaffaro (Brookhaven, NY) (2-0) was credited with six saves.
For the Hawks, Jack McLaughlin and Michael Plante led the way with two goals each. Colin Cleary and Nick Darcangelo both had a goal and an assist, and Ryan O'Hara won 17 faceoffs. O'Hara also scooped up three ground balls, which matched Brandon Ortiz and Aidan Harrington for the team lead. Jacob Kenny (0-1) took the loss in goal after making 11 saves and allowing seven tallies in the first half. Zach Novak played the second half in net, surrendering eight goals and notching five saves.
Up next for the Privateers is a 7 p.m. contest at Stevens (2-0) on Tuesday. Maritime will be facing the Ducks for the fifth straight year, a streak that started in the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
