Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Maritime Goes Wire-to-Wire at Old Westbury

OLD WESTBURY, NY – The Maritime College men's basketball team jumped out to a 10-2 lead and never looked back on Wednesday night.  The Privateers (13-11, 9-6 Skyline) never trailed in a 76-61 victory over host Old Westbury (8-16, 6-9 Skyline) at the Clark Athletic Center.

Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) sank a trey on the game's opening possession, and a Zion Williams (Indianapolis, IN) layup extended the cushion to 10-2 barely three minutes into the contest.  The Panthers cut their deficit to five at 15-10, but Maritime responded with an 18-2 run to open up a 33-12 advantage with 6:31 left in the first half.  Old Westbury closed the period on a 14-5 spurt, though, trimming the margin to 12 points, 38-26.

After the Panthers got within five, 40-35, early in the second half, Williams scored five straight points to bring the advantage back to double-figures.  Old Westbury immediately countered with five points of its own to make it a 45-40 game before a Chris Zaveckas (Merrick, NY) three sparked an 8-2 rally that put the Privateers up 53-42.  The Panthers again pulled within seven, 59-52, at the 8:00 mark, but would get no closer.  Maritime ended the contest on a 17-9 spurt to wrap up a 76-61 win and its third straight season sweep of Old Westbury.

Devaney and Williams paced the Privateers with 20 points apiece.  Devaney also had eight rebounds and three steals, while Williams secured five boards.  Anthony Lang (Northport, NY) notched 10 points and five rebounds off the bench, and Evan Block (Seaford, NY) tallied eight points to go along with eight boards and three assists.  Maritime shot 43.9 percent (29-of-66) from the field, including 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from downtown, and 52.6 percent (10-of-19) at the charity stripe.

For the Panthers, Joel Ofori finished with 25 points, 21 rebounds and five blocks.  Jermaine King Jr. added 12 points, while Stephon Rosch Kouassi contributed three assists and three blocks.  Overall, Old Westbury shot 37.5 percent (21-of-56) from the floor, 15.8 percent (3-of-19) from long range, and 80 percent (16-of-20) at the free throw line.  The Panthers outrebounded the Privateers 41-40.

With the victory, Maritime remained one game ahead of St. Joseph's LI for second place in the Black Division.  The Privateers will clinch No. 4 seed in the Skyline Tournament and a home quarterfinal game if they win their regular season finale at Farmingdale (21-3, 14-1 Skyline), which is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.  The Rams defeated Maritime, 82-76, at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Jan. 14.
