FARMINGDALE, NY – On Saturday, the Maritime College men's basketball team concluded its regular season by visiting Farmingdale. In their final game before the Skyline Conference Tournament, the Privateers (13-12, 9-7 Skyline) suffered a 94-56 loss to the Rams (22-3, 15-1 Skyline) at Nold Hall.
Farmingdale scored the first six points of the game before Maritime responded with three consecutive treys to go ahead, 9-6. After the Rams went back in front, 11-9,
Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) sank a free throw to make it a one-point game, 11-10, with 14:05 left in the first half. Farmingdale went on a 13-2 run over the next 5:25, though, to extend its cushion to 24-12. Devaney followed with back-to-back layups, but the Rams closed the half on a 17-4 spurt to take a 21-point, 41-20, advantage into the locker room.
The Privateers pulled within 16 points at 48-32 four minutes into the second half, but would get no closer the rest of the way. Farmingdale opened up its largest lead of the game when Evan Grant's jumper made the score 94-47 with 2:29 remaining. Maritime notched the last seven points of the contest to close within 94-56 at the final buzzer.
Zion Williams (Indianapolis, IN) was held to nine points, snapping his streak of nine consecutive 20-point efforts. He also distributed three assists.
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) registered eight points and five boards, while Devaney
finished with seven points, five rebounds and three blocks.
Jesse Tricario (New Hyde Park, NY) added five boards for the Privateers, who had a 40-39 edge on the glass. As a team, Maritime shot 32.4 percent (22-of-68) from the field, 23.1 percent (6-of-26) from long range, and 37.5 percent (6-of-16) at the free throw line.
Five Rams scored in double figures, led by Jordan Tucker's 16 points. Kentrell Evans tallied 13 points and eight rebounds, while Michael Notias recorded 12 points and four assists. Dylon Stanley contributed 10 points and eight boards off the bench, and Sean Conroy notched 10 points to go along with five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Farmingdale shot a combined 55.7 percent (34-of-61) from the floor, 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from downtown, and 73.9 percent (17-of-23) at the charity stripe.
Despite the loss, the Privateers clinched the No. 4 seed in the Skyline Tournament when St. Joseph's LI fell to Old Westbury. As a result, Maritime has a home game in the quarterfinals of the Skyline Tournament for the fourth consecutive year. The Privateers welcome fifth-seeded Purchase (11-14, 9-7 Skyline) to Riesenberg Gymnasium at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The Panthers won the only regular season meeting between the teams, 77-75, on Jan. 24.
