NEW LONDON, CT – The Maritime College men's lacrosse team kicked off its 2026 campaign by visiting Coast Guard on Saturday. After trailing 8-6 at halftime, the Privateers (1-0) allowed just two goals in the second half of a 12-10 victory over the Bears (0-1) at Cadet Memorial Field.
Coast Guard recorded two early tallies before
Ryan Hannaford (Bayport, NY) and
Nick LiPuma (Bayport, NY) scored 42 seconds apart to bring Maritime even at 2-2. The Bears responded with three straight goals, but
Tyler Mahood (Sleepy Hollow, NY) found the back of the net twice late in the first quarter to cut the Privateers' deficit to 5-4. The teams traded goals in the second quarter, and Coast Guard took an 8-6 advantage into the break.
In the third quarter, Maritime came out of the gate with four consecutive scores.
Thomas McCarvil (Port Washington, NY) notched his first two collegiate tallies, then Mahood put the Privateers in front for the first time, 9-8. He then assisted on Hannaford's goal that made it 10-8. After Noah Heller snapped the run in the final second of the third quarter, McCarvil completed a hat trick midway through the final period. Coast Guard got within one at 11-10 before
Joseph Fazio (Massapequa, NY) capped Maritime's fourth straight win over the Bears, 12-10.
Hannaford finished with four goals, while Mahood tallied four points on three goals and an assist. McCarvil also had a hat trick, and
Nick Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY) distributed four assists. LiPuma, meanwhile, notched a goal and an assist.
Ryan Giambone (Coram, NY) and
Brody Smith (Rehoboth Beach, DE) paced the Privateers with three ground balls apiece. Goalkeeper
Cristian Scaffaro (Brookhaven, NY) (1-0) was credited with 12 saves in a winning effort.
For Coast Guard, Ezekiel Christian led the way with five points. He scored four times and added an assist. Max Silver contributed three goals and an assist, while Heller tallied a goal and an assist. Mason Tucker scooped up 14 ground balls for the Bears, with Eric Key and Samuel Fritz causing three turnovers apiece. Brett Tobasky (0-1) made eight saves in net.
Maritime's home opener is scheduled for next Saturday, Feb. 21, when New Paltz (0-0) visits Reinhart Field at 1 p.m.
