Maritime Upended By Hunter

THROGGS NECK, NY – After playing three straight Skyline Conference matches, the Maritime College volleyball team faced Hunter in a non-conference tilt on Thursday night.  In their only home contest over a five-match stretch, the Privateers (3-13) suffered a 25-22, 25-16, 25-15 loss to the Hawks (7-6) at Riesenberg Gymnasium.

Hunter scored 11 of the first 14 points and still held a 16-8 advantage when Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) slammed a kill to start a 7-2 Maritime run that brought the Privateers within 18-15.  After back-to-back kills by Kassidy Cruz pushed the margin back to five points at 20-15, Maritime responded with five straight points.  The Privateers leveled the score at 20-20 on a Laci Werner (New York, NY) service ace.  However, the Hawks ended the set on a 5-2 spurt to claim a 25-22 win.

In the second set, it was Maritime that jumped out to the early lead.  The Privateers built a 6-2 cushion before Hunter rallied to draw even at 6-6.  Maritime rattled off four of the next five points to regain a 10-7 advantage, but the Hawks countered with an 11-2 run to go in front 18-12.  Hunter took the set, 25-16, to go ahead 2-0 in the match.

The Hawks opened up a 3-0 lead to start the third set, then extended that margin to 13-7.  The Privateers got kills from Lara Cocis (Coeur d'Alene, ID) and Werner to pull within four at 13-9 before Hunter used a 7-1 run to increase its cushion to 20-10.  After Maritime rattled off four straight points to trim its deficit to 20-14, the Hawks went on a 5-1 rally to close out the set, 25-15, and the match, 3-0.

Werner paced the Privateers with seven kills.  She added three aces.  Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY) also served three aces, while Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) had a double-double with 17 assists and 11 digs to go along with three blocks.  Andressa Dias-Moreira (Forest Hills, NY) contributed three blocks of her own, and Joan Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY) tallied nine digs.

For Hunter, Michelle Liu led the way with 11 kills, seven digs and six aces.  Cruz also smashed 11 kills for the Hawks.  Sofia Marolla finished with 31 assists and seven digs, while Maya Cosmo recorded a match-high 15 digs.  Melissa Alfaro, meanwhile, didn't commit a hitting error.  She hit .625, posting five kills in eight attempts, to go along with four blocks.

On Saturday, Maritime (1-2 Skyline) resumes its conference slate with a 1 p.m. matchup at Farmingdale (6-2, 1-1 Skyline).  It will be the first of five straight Skyline matches for the Privateers.
