Privateers Take Set Off Farmingdale

FARMINGDALE, NY – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime College volleyball team traveled to Farmingdale for a Skyline Conference matchup.  The Privateers (3-14, 1-3 Skyline) won a set against the Rams (8-2, 3-1 Skyline) for the first time since 2018, but ultimately dropped a 25-19, 25-13, 23-25, 25-10 decision at the Walter A. Lynch Sports Center.

After the teams traded points early in the first set, Farmingdale used a 3-0 run to open up a 16-12 advantage.  Maritime scored the next two points, but the Rams followed with five straight to increase their lead to 21-14.  The Privateers responded with a 4-0 rally to get back within three, 21-18, before Farmingdale closed out a 25-19 set win.

The Rams jumped out to a 5-1 edge in the second set, then Maritime rattled off three straight points to cut its deficit to one.  However, Farmingdale claimed 15 of the next 18 points to build a 20-7 cushion.  With a 25-13 set victory, the Rams took a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, there were five ties and three lead changes.  Three straight Laci Werner (New York, NY) kills sparked a 6-1 Privateers rally that gave Maritime a 10-6 advantage.  After Farmingdale got back within one at 11-10, the Privateers pushed the margin back to three points at 17-14.  Maritime was still in front, 23-19, when Farmingdale went on a 4-1 run to make it 24-23.  However, Werner followed with a kill to close out the frame, 25-23.  It was the Privateers' first set win in their last seven matches against the Rams, a string of 23 consecutive sets.

Maritime couldn't carry that momentum into the fourth set, though.  Farmingdale took the first two points and opened up an 11-4 lead, prompting a Privateers timeout.  After the Rams built a 20-7 cushion, Maritime claimed three of the next four points.  The Privateers would get no closer, however, as Farmingdale finished off the 3-1 triumph with a 25-10 fourth set win.

Werner notched her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 14 kills and 14 digs.  Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) also had a double-double with 18 assists and 11 digs.  She added three blocks, and Andressa Dias-Moreira (Forest Hills, NY) recorded three blocks of her own.  Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY), meanwhile, tallied seven kills and seven digs.

For the Rams, Samantha Russo led the way with 11 kills and 19 digs.  Sarah Rende posted 28 assists, 10 digs and four service aces, while Ana Henry smashed nine kills on .333 hitting to go along with four aces.  As a team, Farmingdale served 16 aces and outdug the Privateers 62-53.

This was the start of a span where Maritime plays four out of six on the road.  The Privateers return to action on Tuesday, when they visit St. Joseph's Brooklyn (4-6, 0-1 Skyline) at 6 p.m.
