KINGS POINT, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team visited Merchant Marine on Tuesday looking for its second consecutive win. The Privateers (3-12, 1-2 Skyline) played a tight first set, but ultimately fell to the Mariners (13-2, 4-0 Skyline) by a 25-21, 25-13, 25-10 count at Leibertz Gym.
There were 10 ties and six lead changes in the first set. Merchant Marine held a 9-8 advantage when
Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY) ripped a kill to start a 4-1 Maritime run that put the Privateers in front 12-10. The Mariners responded with a 6-2 spurt, though, to open up a 16-14 cushion. After Merchant Marine extended the margin to 23-18, the Privateers rattled off three of the next four points before a Carly Soboloski kill finished off the set, 25-21.
In the second set, the Mariners raced out to a 16-8 lead. An
Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) kill then sparked a 4-1 Maritime rally that brought the Privateers within 17-12. However, Merchant Marine captured the next seven points to increase its advantage to 24-12 before wrapping up a 25-13 win.
Maritime opened the third set with a
Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) service ace, but the Mariners responded by taking eight of the next nine points. After Merchant Marine pushed the margin to nine points at 14-5, the Privateers went on a 3-1 run to cut the margin to 15-8. The Mariners ended the set on a 10-2 run, though. With a 25-10 third-set triumph, Merchant Marine sealed a 3-0 match victory.
Laci Werner (New York, NY) led Maritime with seven kills. Thiel
handed out 10 assists to go along with five digs, while Pavarini
had seven digs and two service aces.
Joan Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY) finished with a team-high 14 digs.
As a team, the Mariners hit .348 (42 kills, 10 digs, 92 attempts) in the victory. Sydney Douglas smacked 15 kills on .452 hitting while also notching six digs and five aces. Sophie Phillips posted a .600 hitting percentage with 10 kills, and Miranda Zeng distributed 32 assists. Alexa Tipps, meanwhile, collected a match-best 16 digs.
After playing three straight Skyline Conference matches, the Privateers welcome Hunter (6-6) to Riesenberg Gymnasium for a non-conference tilt at 6 p.m. on Thursday. It will be Maritime's only home contest in a five-match span.
