Maritime Beats Purchase In Straight Sets

PURCHASE, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team (3-11, 1-1 Skyline) picked up its first Skyline Conference win of the season on Saturday, a 25-18, 25-23, 25-21 triumph over Purchase (5-7, 0-2 Skyline) at Purchase College Gymnasium.  Laci Werner (New York, NY) hit .478 in the victory, smashing a match-high 13 kills while committing just two errors in 23 attempts.

In addition to posting a .571 hitting percentage in the match, Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) recorded five service aces.  Lara Cocis (Coeur d'Alene, ID) added four aces.  Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) finished with 21 assists and seven digs, while Joan Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY) had 11 digs and four assists.

After the Panthers began the match by scoring four of the first five points, a Cocis kill sparked a 9-2 Privateers rally that gave Maritime a 10-6 lead.  Purchase rallied to tie it at 12-12 before Werner started a 6-2 run with consecutive kills.  The Panthers got back within three at 20-17, but the Privateers took five of the last six points to wrap up the set, 25-18.  As a team, Maritime hit .320 (11-3-25) in the opening frame.

There were 11 ties and four lead changes in the second set.  The Privateers took an early 6-3 advantage before Purchase rallied to go up 11-9.  After a Cocis kill sparked a 10-5 Maritime run that gave the Privateers a 19-16 cushion, the Panthers responded with five of the next six points to regain the edge, 21-20.  The score was level at 23-23 when Pavarini ripped a kill to bring Maritime to set point.  A Werner kill (her seventh of the period) then closed out the 25-23 set win.

Purchase again raced out to an early cushion in the third set, opening up a 4-1 margin.  The Privateers countered with a 9-2 run, though, going ahead 10-6 on a Pavarini ace.  The Panthers scored six straight points to regain the lead, 12-10, but Maritime claimed 11 of the next 15 points to take a 21-15 advantage.  After Purchase trimmed its deficit to 23-21, a kill by Thiel brought the Privateers to match point.  With a 25-21 third-set victory, Maritime finished off the 3-0 sweep.

Gabby Vanderpool led Purchase with seven kills.  She also had seven digs and six aces.  Marcella Pena tallied nine digs, while Natalia Leite posted eight digs and eight assists.  Lily Dos Santos added eight assists, and Maya Brown served five aces to go along with five digs.

On Tuesday, the Privateers return to action with a 7 p.m. contest at Merchant Marine (12-2, 3-0 Skyline).
