BRONXVILLE, NY – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime College men's basketball team traveled to Sarah Lawrence for a Skyline Conference matchup. The Privateers (10-9, 6-4 Skyline) were unable to overcome an early deficit, as the Gryphons (12-7, 9-1 Skyline) notched a 77-65 victory at the Campbell Sports Center.
Maritime scored the first points of the game on a
Zion Williams (Indianapolis, IN) trey, but Sarah Lawrence followed with a 7-0 run to take the lead. After the Privateers knotted it at 9-9, the Gryphons used a 23-8 spurt to build a 32-17 advantage. The margin was 16 points, 35-19, at halftime.
A Williams layup on the first possession of the second half started a 16-3 Maritime rally that brought the Privateers within three, 38-35, with 14:54 remaining. The Gryphons countered with 13 of the next 14 points, though, to bring their cushion back to 51-36. Maritime got back within seven, 55-48, at the 7:51 mark, but would pull no closer. Sarah Lawrence's 77-65 triumph was its fourth straight win over the Privateers.
Williams
had his fourth consecutive 20-point game, matching his season-high with 26 points. He also secured eight rebounds.
Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY), meanwhile, tallied 18 points and nine boards.
Chris Zaveckas (Merrick, NY) contributed seven points off the bench, and
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) recorded three steals. As a team, Maritime shot 40 percent (24-of-60) from the field, 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from downtown, and 50 percent (9-of-18) at the charity stripe.
Seven different players notched at least eight points for the Gryphons. Braden Burman finished with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Braden Burman notched 12 points, seven boards and four assists. Andrew Kim also tallied 12 points. Chris Dougherty posted a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds to go along with four assists and three steals. Eamon Kelly added 10 points for Sarah Lawrence, which shot a combined 44.3 percent (27-of-61) from the floor. The Gryphons were 10-for-21 (47.6 percent) from long range and 13-for-18 (72.2 percent) at the free throw line.
The Privateers welcome defending Skyline champion Yeshiva (11-8, 10-0 Skyline) to Riesenberg Gymnasium at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. It will be Maritime's Senior Night, with Anderson, Zaveckas,
Evan Block (Seaford, NY) and
James O'Connell (East Williston, NY) being honored prior to the contest.
