NEWBURGH, NY – The Maritime College men's basketball team (8-7, 4-2 Skyline) earned its second straight road win on Saturday afternoon, knocking off Mount St. Mary (2-13, 0-6 Skyline) by an 81-69 count at the Kaplan Center. Three Privateers scored in double-figures, led by
Jake Devaney's (Washingtonville, NY) 22 points.
In addition to his 22 points, Devaney had nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) finished with 19 points, while
Zion Williams (Indianapolis, IN) tallied 10 points, six boards and four assists.
Evan Block (Seaford, NY) recorded double-digit rebounds for the second consecutive game. He secured 12 boards to go along with a career-high eight assists. As a team, Maritime shot 49.2 percent (32-of-65) from the field, 38.7 percent (12-of-31) from long range, and 55.6 percent (5-of-9) at the free throw line. The Privateers also held a 45-35 edge on the glass.
There were four ties and eight lead changes in the first half, as neither side had an advantage of more than seven points in opening 20 minutes. Maritime jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but the Knights responded with a 10-0 run to pull in front. Mount St. Mary built a six-point cushion, 26-20, at the 7:50 mark before the Privateers used a 15-8 spurt to go back ahead, 35-34. After a Justin Rivera three-pointer knotted the score at 40-40 with 32 seconds left until halftime,
Spiro Venetis (Manhasset, NY) sank a trey on the other end to give Maritime a 43-40 edge at the break.
A Devaney layup made it 45-40 early in the second half, but the Knights scored 10 of the next 18 points to regain the lead, 50-48. Devaney followed with a layup, though, to start a 23-9 rally that put the Privateers in front, 73-59. The margin reached a game-high 18 points at 81-63 when Williams sank a trey at the 1:40 mark. Mount St. Mary scored the final six points of the contest to close within 81-69 at the finish.
For the Knights, Matthew Walsh led the way with 16 points. Rivera posted 14 points and four assists, and J.P. Egan just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Mount St. Mary shot a combined 35.8 percent (24-of-67) from the floor, including 30 percent (12-of-40) from downtown, and 64.3 percent (9-of-14) at the charity stripe.
On Tuesday, Maritime returns home for a 7 p.m. matchup with Manhattanville (8-7, 3-3 Skyline).
