BRONX, NY – After a break of nearly two months for finals and the holidays, the Maritime College men's and women's swimming & diving teams returned to action on Wednesday night. In their final meet before the Skyline Conference Championships, the Privateer men and women both swept York and host Lehman at the APEX Swimming Pool. The men's squad earned a 120-24 victory over the Lightning and defeated the Cardinals 120-17. Maritime's women, meanwhile, topped York by a 112-8 score and edged Lehman 94-59.
The Privateers won the first nine events on the men's side before swimming the remainder of the meet as exhibition (where the times count, but swimmers aren't awarded points in the team scoring).
Johnny Walz (Staten Island, NY) was Maritime's only official double-winner. He swept the diving competition, scoring 197.33 points on the 1-meter board and tallying 187.80 points while contesting the 3-meter event for the first time.
Matt Klimek (Malverne, NY) took first in the 1000 yard freestyle (11:39.52), and he posted a time of 5:30.66 in the 500 yard freestyle.
Rowan Hayes (Floral Park, NY) grabbed first in the 50 yard freestyle (22.19), then notched a 58.56-second clocking in the 100 yard breaststroke.
Alex Osypenko (Oyster Bay, NY) took second behind his teammate in the 50 freestyle (23.30) and followed that with a victory in the 100 yard freestyle (51.83).
Other event winners for the Privateer men were
Liam MacManus (Islip, NY) in the 200 yard freestyle (2:07.63),
Michael Saharov (Staten Island, NY) in the 200 yard individual medley (2:27.74) and
Alex Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY) in the 100 yard butterfly (1:04.33). In addition, the team of
Victor Pineda (Bronx, NY), Hayes, Osypenko and Saharov took first in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:49.08.
On the women's side,
Rebecca Kmiotek (Lindenhurst, NY),
Oceana Elefante (Sayville, NY) and
Kristen Carroll (New York, NY) all recorded two individual wins. Kmoitek was first in both the 500 freestyle (7:21.86) and 1000 freestyle (15:18.76), while Elefante was victorious in the 100 freestyle (1:04.57) and 100 yard breaststroke (1:26.47). Carroll won the 50 freestyle in 27.73 seconds, then posted a winning time of 1:16.60 in the 100 yard backstroke.
Elefante and Carroll also joined with
Emily Bryant (Hilliard, OH) and
Eva Garcia (Rockville Centre, NY) to take first in the 200 medley relay with a 2:23.00 clocking. Bryant added an individual victory in the 100 butterfly (1:34.94) and a second-place finish in the 200 yard individual medley (3:10.31).
Up next for Maritime is the Skyline Championships, which will take place on Jan. 24-25 at Purchase College.
