Brooklyn Rallies For Five-Set Win Over Privateers

BROOKLYN, NY – On Tuesday night, the Maritime College volleyball team built a two-sets-to-one lead at Brooklyn in its first road contest of the year.  However, the Bulldogs (1-0) fought off four match points in the fourth set to force a fifth, then took the decisive frame, as well, to earn a 10-25, 25-18, 16-25, 28-26, 15-13 victory over the Privateers (2-1) at West Quad Gymnasium.

Maritime hit an outstanding .455 in the first set, smashing 10 kills without committing an error in 22 attempts.  The Privateers held an 8-5 lead when a Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) kill started a 15-4 run that opened up a 23-9 cushion.  An Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) service ace closed out the 25-10 set win.

After the teams traded points early in the second set, Brooklyn used an 11-1 spurt to turn a 4-4 tie into a 15-5 advantage.  The Bulldogs extended the margin to 21-8 before Maritime responded with a 5-0 run to pull within 21-13.  Brooklyn reached set point at 24-14, but the Privateers countered with four straight points to make it 24-18.  The Bulldogs took the next point, however, to clinch the set, 25-18.

In the third set, Maritime jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back.  Brooklyn trimmed its deficit to one at 7-6 before an Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY) kill sparked a 4-0 rally that increased the gap to 11-6.  The Bulldogs again got within one point at 12-11, but the Privateers ended the set by capturing 13 of the final 18 points.  Weist slammed a kill to finish off the frame, 25-16.

Brooklyn scored the first four points of the fourth set.  The Bulldogs still held a 9-3 advantage when Maritime went on a 6-1 run to pull within 10-9.  After Brooklyn pushed the margin back to three points at 13-10, the Privateers rattled off 12 of the next 17 points to go ahead, 22-18.  Maritime reached match point at 24-22, but Brooklyn claimed the next two points to even the score.  The Bulldogs staved off two more match points at 25-24 and 26-25, then used back-to-back Ruti Joshi aces to secure a 28-26 set win and send the match into a decisive stanza.

There were seven ties and four lead changes in the final set.  Brooklyn went up 4-1 before the Privateers rallied to go ahead 10-8.  After the Bulldogs regained the advantage, 13-12, a Pavarini kill evened the score at 13-13.  However, Brooklyn got kills from Olive Carroll and Danielle Fuxman on the next two points to wrap up the set, 15-13, and a come-from-behind 3-2 match win.

Weist had her first career double-double, notching career-highs with 16 kills and 15 digs.  She also tallied seven aces.  Pavarini, meanwhile, recorded her third straight triple-double with 13 kills, 12 assists and 11 digs.  She added three aces and three blocks.  Thiel posted a double-double of her own with 21 kills and 11 digs.  Olivia Casabona (Cross River, NY) tallied 21 digs and Joan Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY) finished with 19 digs, as the Privateers held a 96-87 edge in that category.

Ella Snobar paced the Bulldogs with eight kills to go along with 12 digs.  Amra Mulic registered 12 assists and 17 digs, while Joshi contributed a match-best 22 digs.  Carroll collected 10 digs, and Olivia Fan stuffed six blocks for Brooklyn.

Each of Maritime's next six matches are at Riesenberg Gymnasium.  The Privateers begin the homestand against Baruch (0-4) at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
