Maritime Rolls to Straight Sets Triumph Over Baruch

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team began a six-match homestand with a dominant performance against Baruch on Thursday night.  The Privateers (3-1) finished with 17 service aces in the 25-16, 25-12, 25-15 triumph over the Bearcats (0-5) at Riesenberg Gymnasium.  It was Maritime's first-ever win against Baruch in 10 all-time meetings.

Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) was credited with five aces while also notching seven kills on .286 hitting.  Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY), meanwhile, had eight kills and six aces.  Olivia Casabona (Cross River, NY) contributed four aces and five digs, and Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) distributed 13 assists.  Joan Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY) tallied six digs for the Privateers, who hit a combined .197 (22 kills, nine errors, 66 attempts) as a team.

For the Bearcats, Dibjot Kaur led the way with six kills to go along with seven digs.  Alicia Graves finished with five kills, while Ella Wang served four aces.  Karen Pozo Castro and Isabel Torres handed out six assists apiece, and Torres also paced Baruch with nine digs.

Maritime took command right from the start, scoring five of the first six points.  The Privateers extended the margin to 15-8 before the Bearcats used a 3-0 rally to pull within four at 15-11.  However, Pavarini responded with a kill to start a 9-2 run that brought Maritime to set point.  As a team, the Privateers slammed 11 kills and hit .261 in the 25-16 first-set win.

After Maritime opened up a 6-2 lead in the second set, Baruch rallied within one at 7-6.  The Privateers countered with five of the next six points, though, to make it 12-7.  The Bearcats claimed the next two points, but Maritime ended the set on a 13-3 spurt to claim a 25-12 win and go up 2-0 in the match.  The Privateers only made one attack error and posted a team hitting percentage of .273 in the frame.

In the third set, Maritime recorded 10 aces.  Pavarini had four during a 10-0 run that turned a 4-3 deficit into a 13-4 lead, then Weist served three in a row as part of a 6-0 rally that increased the cushion to 19-8.  The Privateers took the set by a 25-15 count to wrap up their first 3-0 win of the year.  Maritime is now 3-1 overall for the second time in three seasons.

On Tuesday, the Privateers continue the homestand by welcoming FDU-Florham (2-1) to Riesenberg Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. matchup.
