Maritime Cruises to 3-0 Victory at York

JAMAICA, NY – After playing six consecutive matches at home, the Maritime College began a stretch of four straight away from Riesenberg Gymnasium by visiting York on Thursday night.  The Privateers (6-4) never trailed in the contest, posting a dominant 25-11, 25-12, 25-14 victory over the Cardinals (3-6) at York College Gymnasium.

Maritime quickly built a 7-1 lead in the first set and eventually extended that advantage to 13-3.  York scored seven of the next 10 points to pull within 16-10 before an Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY) kill started a 6-0 run that put the Privateers in front, 22-10.  Maritime took the opening set by a 25-11 count.

In the second set, the Privateers again jumped out to a 13-3 cushion on the strength of three Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) service aces.  The Cardinals rattled off the next five points to make it 13-8, but Maritime responded with a 9-2 spurt to increase the margin to 22-10.  Nicole Scourakis (Hampton Bays, NY) smacked a kill to finish off the 25-12 set win that gave the Privateers a 2-0 lead in the match.

There were three early ties in the third set before a Pavarini kill sparked an 11-1 Maritime rally that put the Privateers in front 14-4.  After Maritime extended its advantage to 20-8, York claimed the next three points.  The Privateers countered with three straight to pull within two points of victory, and a Pavarini kill closed out the set, 25-14, and the 3-0 sweep.

Pavarini finished with nine kills, nine aces, six assists and five digs.  She also hit .318 in the win.  Weist had a match-high 12 kills on .333 hitting, and Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) handed out 20 assists to go along with three aces.  Olivia Casabona (Cross River, NY) and Joan Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY), meanwhile, paced Maritime with nine digs apiece.

For the Cardinals, Zoe Lefebvre led the way with five kills and 10 digs.  Jasmie Dias added nine digs, while Samantha Panameno distributed eight assists.

Up next for the Privateers is their first Skyline Conference match of the season.  Maritime (0-0 Skyline) travels to Sarah Lawrence (5-8, 0-0 Skyline) at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
