BRONXVILLE, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team traveled to Sarah Lawrence for its Skyline Conference opener on Tuesday night. The Privateers (6-5, 0-1 Skyline) saw their two-match winning streak come to an end with a 25-17, 25-19, 25-21 loss to the Gryphons (6-8, 1-0 Skyline) at the Campbell Sports Center.
Maritime scored the first three points of the match and opened up a 9-6 advantage on a kill by
Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY). Sarah Lawrence responded with a 12-5 run, though, to pull ahead, 18-14. After the Privateers got back within two at 18-16, the Gryphons rattled off six straight points to increase their cushion to 24-16. Sarah Lawrence took the first set by a 25-17 count.
In the second set, the Gryphons jumped out to a 20-7 lead. Maritime won the next four points, with
Olivia Casabona (Cross River, NY) serving three consecutive aces, then, after Sarah Lawrence captured two in a row, used a 6-0 spurt to trim its deficit to 22-17. That's as close as the Privateers would get, though, as the Gryphons held on for a 25-19 set win to go ahead 2-0 in the match.
Each team had an early run in the third set. Maritime built a 4-0 cushion before Sarah Lawrence earned the next seven points. Then it was the Privateers' turn again. Casabona had three aces during an 11-3 rally that put Maritime ahead 15-10. The Privateers still held a four-point edge, 19-15, when the Gryphons went on a 7-0 spurt to regain the lead, 22-19. Sarah Lawrence closed out the sweep with a 25-21 set win.
Pavarini
paced Maritime with eight kills, and
Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) tallied six kills.
Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) distributed 17 assists and added four digs. Casabona
, meanwhile, had a career-high six service aces to go along with 10 digs.
For the Gryphons, Nikolet Vataj led the way with 11 kills on .333 hitting. Athena Kazos finished with 10 kills, and Brynn Beck recorded seven kills while also notching five digs. Sophia Costa notched 26 assists, six digs and four aces for Sarah Lawrence.
On Saturday, the Privateers conclude non-conference play with their final tri-match of the season. Maritime takes on host Albertus Magnus (6-8) at 11 a.m. before facing Medgar Evers (0-8) at 1 p.m.
