Devaney, Team Set Single-Match Service Ace Records

NEW HAVEN, CT – After suffering a 25-18, 25-23, 25-23 loss to Albertus Magnus (7-9) in its first match on Saturday, the Maritime College volleyball team (7-6) rebounded with a dominant 25-7, 25-12, 25-8 victory over Medgar Evers (0-9) at the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Center.  In the win, Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) set a program record with 14 service aces.  The Privateers' 35 aces as a team were also a single-match school record.

Maritime scored the first two points against Medgar Evers and quickly extended that advantage to 9-2.  Devaney's first two aces made it 14-3, then Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) had a pair to increase the margin to 20-5.  Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY), meanwhile, recorded three of the Privateers' 10 aces in the set.  Maritime also hit a combined .692 (nine kills, no errors, 13 attempts) in the 25-7 set win.

Thiel began the second set with five consecutive aces, but the Cougars scored nine of the next 11 points to go ahead, 9-7.  Medgar Evers still led, 12-10, when Devaney smashed a kill to start a set-ending 15-0 run.  She had eight aces during the rally, including one on set point that capped the 25-12 triumph.

Devaney continued her serving dominance to start the third set, notching three straight aces to put the Privateers ahead 4-1.  After Medgar Evers claimed the next two points to pull within one, Maritime went on a 16-3 spurt to extend the margin to 20-6.  Fittingly, it was an ace that ended it, as Xieana Rodriguez (Queens, NY) served the Privateers' record-setting 35th of the contest on match point, closing out the 25-8 set win and 3-0 match victory.

With 14 aces, the highest single-match total in the NCAA this season, Devaney broke Erika Kirchner's school record of 11 set on Oct. 24, 2018.  The 35 total aces, meanwhile, were one more than Maritime had in a five-set win against Yeshiva on Oct. 11, 2012.  The Privateers also hit .280 (25-11-50) as a team.

In addition to her 14 aces, Devaney finished with nine kills and five digs.  Weist had six kills and six aces, while Thiel notched nine assists and seven aces.  Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) handed out seven assists, and Olivia Casabona (Cross River, NY) notched a match-high six digs.

Jennifer Metra had two kills and Aliyah Chapman recorded four digs for the Cougars.

Against Alberts Magnus, Maritime fell into an early 7-2 hole.  After the Privateers trimmed their deficit to 7-5, the Falcons pushed the margin back to five points at 13-8.  A Devaney kill brought Maritime back within two at 16-14 before Albertus Magnus rattled off seven of the next eight points to build a 23-15 cushion.  The Falcons took the opening set by a 25-18 count.

There were seven ties in the second set.  The Privateers raced out to a 4-0 advantage on the strength of back-to-back Weist aces, but the Falcons rallied to level the score at 8-8.  After Maritime regained a three-point cushion at 14-11, Albertus Magnus went on a 6-2 rally to take its first lead of the set, 17-16.  The Falcons eventually opened up a 23-20 margin before holding on for a 25-23 win that put them ahead 2-0 in the match.

The Privateers again took an early lead in the third set, jumping ahead 3-0.  However, Albertus Magnus scored 11 of the next 12 points to go ahead 11-4.  Maritime responded with a 12-3 run of its own, and went back in front, 16-15, on a Thiel kill.  With the score knotted at 17-17, the Falcons used a 6-1 spurt to pull within two points of victory.  The Privateers cut their deficit to 24-23, but a Devaney service error ended the set, 25-23, and gave Albertus Magnus the 3-0 match victory.

Pavarini paced Maritime with 10 kills against the Falcons, while Devaney tallied seven kills.  Thiel had a double-double with 15 assists and 10 digs, while Casabona recorded a match-best 20 digs.

For the Falcons, Jazmine Taboas Negro led the way with six kills to go along with 10 digs.  Alexys Signor had 11 digs and Paula Matheus served four aces.  Shalese Gordon, meanwhile, distributed 12 assists and added six digs.

Each of the Privateers' next two contests will be at home.  Maritime (0-1 Skyline) resumes its Skyline Conference schedule with a 7:30 p.m. matchup against Merchant Marine (9-6, 3-0 Skyline) at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Tuesday.
