Maritime Battles In Loss to Merchant Marine

THROGGS NECK, NY – There were 14 ties and 10 lead changes in the first two sets of the Maritime College volleyball team's match against rival Merchant Marine on Tuesday night.  The Mariners (10-6, 4-0 Skyline) took both sets, however, then also won the third to notch a 27-25, 25-22, 25-15 victory over the Privateers (7-7, 0-2 Skyline) at Riesenberg Gymnasium.

Merchant Marine scored the first three points of the match before Maritime went on a 9-2 run to go ahead 9-5.  The Mariners countered with 16 of the next 22 points, though, to build a 21-15 advantage.  Merchant Marine reached set point at 24-18, but the Privateers responded with a 7-0 spurt to earn a set point opportunity of their own.  After regaining the lead, 26-25, the Mariners converted their seventh set point, closing out the 27-25 triumph on a kill by Maddie Mayer.

In the second set, Merchant Marine again built an early cushion, 3-1.  Maritime rallied to go ahead 6-4, but the Mariners countered with a 5-2 run to take a 9-8 edge.  The Privateers scored the next four points, though, to pull in front, 12-9.  Maritime still led, 18-17, when Merchant Marine went on a 6-2 spurt to open up a 23-20 advantage.  The Mariners held on for a 25-22 set win that put them ahead, 2-0, in the match.

After an Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY) kill gave the Privateers a 4-3 lead in the third set, Merchant Marine rattled off 16 of the next 20 points.  Maritime got back within eight at 20-12, but would pull no closer.  The Mariners completed the sweep with a 25-15 set win.

Weist led the Privateers with eight kills, while Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) and Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) each notched five kills and five digs.  Olivia Casabona (Cross River, NY) had a team-best 17 digs, and Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) distributed 12 assists.  Emma DeMuro (Mahopac, NY), meanwhile, tallied five blocks.

Carly Soboloski recorded a double-double for Merchant Marine with 12 kills and 11 digs.  Mayer finished with nine kills, while Stephanie Schatzman posted 22 digs and seven service aces.  Sydney Douglas added six aces of her own, and Emma Borlie handed out 39 assists.  As a team, the Mariners served 17 aces and hit .203 (45 kills, 21 errors, 118 attempts).

Maritime returns to action on Thursday, when it hosts Purchase (2-9, 0-1 Skyline) at 7 p.m.  The Privateers have won two straight against the Panthers, including a five-set triumph last season.
