Privateers Post Dominant Victory Over Purchase

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team put forth a dominant performance against Purchase on Thursday night.  The Privateers (8-7, 1-2 Skyline) hit .235 (26 kills, 10 errors, 68 attempts) as a team, served 15 aces, and didn't trail in either of the first two sets of a 25-7, 25-12, 25-12 victory over the Panthers (2-10, 0-2 Skyline) at Riesenberg Gymnasium.

Maritime posted a season-best .320 (9-1-25) hitting percentage in the first set.  The Privateers used runs of 5-0 and 7-0 to open up a 12-1 advantage, and an Emma DeMuro (Mahopac, NY) kill increased the margin to 18-4.  Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY) smacked a kill to finish off the 25-7 set win.

It was more of the same in the second set.  Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) served the first four points, and Maritime built an 11-2 cushion.  After Purchase got within 11-5, the Privateers went on a 10-0 run with Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) serving to extend their lead to 21-5.  The Panthers responded with a 7-0 spurt to cut the margin to 21-12 before Maritime claimed the final four points of the set.  The Privateers claimed the set by a 25-12 count.

Purchase took its first lead of the match early in the third set, but a Pavarini kill sparked a 10-0 rally that put Maritime in front, 14-5.  After the Panthers won back-to-back points, the Privateers went on another eight-point spurt, with Nicole Scourakis (Hampton Bays, NY) notching three aces during the run that made it 22-7.  Maritime closed out the set, 25-12, to complete its first sweep of Purchase since 2017.

Pavarini led the Privateers with eight kills on .333 hitting.  She also registered nine assists and five aces.  Weist hit .400 with seven kills, while Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) smashed six kills and had a .357 hitting percentage.  Olivia Casabona (Cross River, NY) and Joan Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY) tallied eight digs apiece, and Thiel handed out 14 assists.  Scourakis, meanwhile, finished with four aces and five digs.

Natalia Leite notched a match-high 11 digs for the Panthers.  Maya Brown collected five of Purchase's six aces.

On Tuesday, Maritime begins a two-match road trip with a 7 p.m. visit to St. Joseph's LI (8-4, 2-1 Skyline).
